A group of peddlers are pictured in Welch during the last century. The photo is one of hundreds included in “West Virginia Company Stores” by Dale Payne. The peddlers made it a habit of sneaking into company towns to provide workers an alternative to buying at the company stores. Most of their work was done under the cover of darkness to avoid beatings by the company guard.
