WVU Treasure 4

Curators Ridderbusch, left, and John Cuthbert examine a document, signed by Benjamin Franklin, granting land in present-day Greene County, Pa., that was claimed by Virginia as part of Monongalia County until 1780. Also pictured is the only known signed surveyor’s compass made by Benjamin Rittenhouse, one of America’s most famous scientific instrument makers. The compass was used to survey the Deakins Line which settles a border dispute between Virginia and Maryland in the 1780s. Both items are currently on display in the WVRHC’s Davis Galleries.
