OAK HILL — The Oak Hill Beautification Commission is sponsoring a city-wide litter pickup on Saturday, May 10, according to City Manager Tom Oxley. Participants are requested to gather at City Hall at 8 a.m.
“We are particularly interested in attracting representatives of civic clubs, churches and businesses to participate in the cleanup. It is not necessary for the entire club or church membership or all employees of the business to participate, but a token representative or two from your entity would say a lot about your interest in your community,” Oxley said.
Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Coffee, juice and doughnuts also will be available.
Mayor Bill Hannabass said one of the chief complaints he receives is about the city’s cleanliness — or lack of it, and he believes everyone can help combat the problem.
“A lot of people want the city to do the sidewalks... For instance, our city employees probably could sweep all the sidewalks in the city, but if you or I sweep our own, you free up all those man hours of city employees to do things that you and I can’t do,” Hannabass said.
He also encourages people around the city, whether residents or owners and/or employees of local businesses, to pitch in with the cleanup.
“If you don’t have time to come to an organized pickup — because I know everyone’s busy — take 15 or 20 minutes sometime and clean up in front of your home or business. I encourage everybody to come and show their support, but if you can’t, please help us clean up the city at another time.”
If you plan to participate, please call 469-9541 and tell Sherry, Jenny or Tom who you represent and how many will be participating. This will help organizers plan for refreshments.
