National VFW commander to visit Oak Hill tomorrow

The national commander of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Glen M. Gardner Jr., kicked off a 14-city tour of West Virginia Nov. 16. During his four-day visit, Gardner will brief local VFW posts on the progress of the organization’s grassroots efforts to increase VA funding, to provide sufficient long-term VA health care, and how the VFW is supporting members of the military, National Guard, reserves and their families.

Gardner will visit Post 3110, Oak Hill, on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at approximately 11 a.m.

Gardner, who hails from Texas, was elected commander at the VFW’s 109th national convention held in August. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966-1970, as an aircraft mechanic with the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group 12, in Chu Lai, Vietnam, 1968-69. He was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

The VFW, founded in 1899, assists all veterans and their families obtain veterans’ entitlements and other services. In addition, the organization works for the well being of those serving on active duty, in the National Guard and the Reserves. There are 2.4 million members of the VFW and its auxiliaries located in approximately 8,500 posts worldwide.
