A storm called by scientists a “polar vortex” sent much of the country into a skidding, slip-sliding halt early this week, closing schools and businesses from the northern United States into the Deep South. According to meteorologists, the vortex brought cold air piled up at the North Pole roaring into the U.S. In the Plateau area of Fayette County, temperatures fell below zero (7 below at one point Tuesday morning in Oak Hill, top photo at right) with wind chills falling well into the double digits below zero. Schools were called off all week as the storm brought snow and bone-chilling temperatures. The Fayette County Board of Education meeting scheduled for Monday, Jan. 6 was moved to 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13 at the central office in Fayetteville, according to Superintendent Keith Butcher.
