— The New River gained more kudos recently as it was named the Best Whitewater River by readers of Get Out!, the online magazine of outdoor adventure in the Ohio River region. Snowshoe Mountain also was chosen as Best Ski Resort by the magazine’s readers.

“If you look at the results, it’s clear that Get Out! readers are in the know when it comes to outdoor adventure in the Ohio Valley,” said editor Mary Reed in a press release. “Each destination that earned a ‘best’ nod from our readers is well worth a trip this year.”

“We absolutely have international-class paddling here,” said Maura Kistler, owner of Fayetteville’s Water Stone Outdoors, of the New River. The lower New River runs reliably through a gorge that’s 1,000 feet deep, making it a haven for rafting class III-V whitewater, and there is no shortage of outfitters servicing the river.

Snowshoe Mountain, which receives 180 inches of natural snow per season, has extended the 2010 season to April 5 because of the season’s plentiful natural snow. “I think what makes Snowshoe the region’s best ski resort is the complete ski resort experience that we offer,” said Laura Parquette, communications manager for Snowshoe. “Not only do we have the region’s best terrain, we have a beautiful mountaintop village with dining and shopping options, as well as great activities like our pools, spa and adventure activities.”

Get Out! magazine’s coverage region includes western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana, as well as portions of Maryland and Illinois. Activities covered include hiking, cycling, paddling, snow sports and other active outdoor pursuits.
