Vote 2012

Tuesday final day to make your voice heard in election

— Early voting has proved to be a very popular option for a lot of West Virginians.

Anything that helps with the total number of those registered in casting a ballot is a plus.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, West Virginia is one of 32 states and the District of Columbia where any qualified voter can cast a ballot in person during a designated period prior to Election Day, with no excuse or justification required.

It’s great to be on the forefront of providing useful services such as this.

Voter turnout here during this election season so far has been encouraging.

As of noon on Wednesday, almost 87,000 West Virginia voters had cast their ballots during the early voting period, according to the office of the Secretary of State.

Another nearly 9,900 West Virginia voters had cast an absentee ballot.

While bad conditions could have certainly contributed to lower turnouts during the miserable weather caused by Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm that blew through West Virginia last week, 14,301 people voted early on Monday and during the peak times of rain and snow on Tuesday, another 5,669 people voted early.

Of course, most choose to cast their ballots on Election Day, which is Tuesday with polls open statewide from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

If you are unsure of your polling place location, check with your county clerk, although no polling places changed in Fayette County since the last election, according to County Clerk Kelvin Holliday.

We strongly encourage you to vote.

There are 1,246,559 registered voters in West Virginia.

The turnout in West Virginia for the 2008 General Election was 58.7 percent.

Our hope is that this election season will show an increase on that number.

It is of extreme importance for our citizens to be involved in this process.

Choosing our government officials, the ones leading us locally, statewide and nationally, is a great privilege that we must not take for granted.
