Historic Fayette Theater will hold open auditions for the fall production of “The Red Velvet Cake War,” at 6:30 p.m. July 19 and at 2 p.m. July 21 at the theater.
The story is centered on the three Verdeen cousins, Gaynelle, Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette, who have chosen the worst possible time to throw their family reunion.
Cee Cee Windham (late 40s to 50) is the sassy and stylish host of “Hospitality House.” Gaynelle Verdeen Bodeen is a walking nervous breakdown in her late 40s. LaMerle Verdeen Minshew (late 60s to 70) is the sharp-tongued matriarch of the Verdeen clan. In his late 80s, Aubrey Verdeen is the good-natured, oxygen-dependent patriarch of the family. Jimmie Wyvette Verdeen is a hearty, good ol’ girl in her 40s with an unfortunate unibrow. The saucy No. 1 mortuarial cosmetologist in the tri-county area is Peaches Verdeen Belrose (late 40s). Gaynelle’s priss-pot neighbor is Bitsy Hargis (late 40s).
Newt Blaylock (50s) is a true Texan eccentric with a patch over one eye. Sporting the classic pair of mirrored shades and a bad attitude is Sheriff Grover Lout (50s). Elsa Dowdall (40 to 50) is the skeptical court-appointed psychologist, which the whole town needs. Bitsy’s mother is Mama Doll Hargis (80 to 120), and last but not least is Purvis Verdeen (50 to 60s), whose favorite pastime is taking pictures of the dead relatives.
Auditions are open to anyone interested in trying out. No previous experience or knowledge of the play or theater is necessary. You are not required to fit the listed age ranges; roles will be adjusted to fit the director’s views.
Committed rehearsals are required. Those wishing to audition do not need to bring a prepared audition piece. If you do not feel comfortable on the stage, there are many opportunities for involvement. Those also interested in behind-the-scenes work such as stage hands, set construction, props, and greeters for the show are invited to attend auditions and speak with the director.
Performance dates are Sept. 28, 29, Oct. 5, 6, 12, and 13 at 8 p.m. Oct. 14 will be a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
