Mount Hope Jubilee kicks off this evening

— The 22nd annual Mount Hope Jubilee kicks off this evening with the Mount Hope Jubilee’s Got Talent Talent Show, and continues through Saturday evening’s Sentimental Journey Prom.

The Jubilee celebrates Mount Hope’s history, as well as that of its now-shuttered high school. In 2012, the Jubilee committee is recognizing Mount Hope area churches.

Grand marshals for the 2012 event are Norville and Juanita Ellison, longtime residents of the city. (See accompanying story.)

Among the special events scheduled for this year’s event is Friday’s first annual Tommy Stafford Memorial Fundraiser Golf Tournament, sponsored by Mountain of Hope.

In spite of the fact that Mount Hope High, long a focus of activities in the Fayette County community, was closed and the community’s students sent to Oak Hill to school, the former school’s Alumni Association is still active, and will gather during Jubilee weekend to celebrate. A Mount Hope High alumni reception is scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the old YMCA building.

Saturday brings a full day of activities, beginning with the festival parade at 10 a.m. The Tom Stafford Memorial Car Show, always a popular draw, begins at 11 a.m. on South Main Street.

Arts and crafts and food vendors will be set up throughout the day, and a jam-packed schedule of music is on tap. Other events include hayrides, face painting, yard sales, a money wheel, rubber duck race and a memorabilia room. Window displays along Main Street also profile the city’s early days as a mining boom town.

    A federal judge has rejected a $65,000 settlement offer in a case involving the alleged rape of a young girl at the former Mount Hope High School, while at the same time throwing out negligence claims against one of the teachers originally listed in the suit.

  • Page-Kincaid recognizes Grant’s 30 years of service

    Mary Grant, the bookkeeper/cashier at the Page-Kincaid PSD for 30 years, retired in early April. Mary started with the PSD in 1983 as the cashier, working with the PSD’s former bookkeeper Dorothy Jeffers. Upon the retirement of Dorothy Jeffers, Mary assumed the duties of bookkeeper and office manager in 2008. Mary also possessed a Class I water operator license and served in a back-up capacity to Bart Jackson.
