Lots more planned for local festival

— The 15th annual Oak Leaf Festival is under way and organizers are preparing for the festival’s largest weekend.

The remaining days of the annual affair are packed with fun-filled events. The theme for the year’s festival is “Celebrating 150 Years of Mountainous Beauty,” tying in with the state’s sesquicentennial celebration.

Also this weekend is the annual Oak Hill High/Collins High Alumni Reunion and various class reunions (see related stories inside), and the annual Minden Reunion.

15th annual Oak Leaf Festival

Thursday, Aug. 29

6-8 p.m. — Oak Hill’s Touch of Talent (talent show) — amphitheater beside City Hall (bring lawn chairs)

Friday, Aug. 30

6-10 p.m. — Fun Factory Inflatables & More, $, city parking lot, Chase Bank

7-9:30 p.m. — Oak Hill’s Rockin’ with “Switch,” amphitheater beside City Hall (bring lawn chairs)

Dusk — intermission for Parade of Lights, Main Street (sponsored by Fayette Awning)

Saturday, Aug. 31

Fun Factory Inflatables & More, $, city parking lot, Chase Bank

7-10 a.m. — Lions Club Pancake Breakfast (sponsored by Oak Hill Lions Club), Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Oyler Avenue

10 a.m. — Raising of the flag and national anthem, amphitheater, Main Street (live performances during the day)

10 a.m.-4 p.m. — Crafts and food vendors, downtown Main Street

11 a.m. — Oak Leaf Parade, Main Street

12 noon-2 p.m. — Plateau Medical Center Health Fair, Lewis House lawn, Main Street

12 noon-4 p.m. — West Virginia Firefighters Weekend, Collins Football Field, Central Avenue

6-9:30 p.m. — Cruise-in and street dance featuring opening act Elvis impersonator and main act Beach Nite Band (formerly the Collegians), amphitheater, Main Street (bring lawn chairs; rain location, Historic Oak Hill School)

Sunday, Sept. 1

1-5 p.m. — Car & Bike Show, Oak Hill High School, Oyler Avenue

5:30-8:30 p.m. — Chili Cook Off, Fayette Institute of Technology, Oyler Avenue

8:30 p.m. — Fireworks display, Oak Hill High School, Oyler Avenue (rain date, Monday, Sept. 2)

Wednesday, Sept. 11

Dusk — 6th annual Oak Leaf Parade of Honor (memorial ceremony to follow at Collins Football Field)
