These days, Minden is known more for people zipping through the trees than for coal shuttling out of the ground.
You’re as likely to enjoy a day at the lake as a day at the river.
And the little white church that once stayed so busy now is a community center and welcomes folks only on special occasions.
Labor Day weekend will be just such an occasion as former residents of the coal boom town named for a city in Germany will gather for the 30th Minden Reunion.
The annual event is set for Saturday, Sept. 4 through Monday, Sept. 6.
A Saturday get-together is planned from 3 to 6 p.m. for early arrivals to socialize with friends, at Minden Community Meeting Center, Inc. in Minden. “Coal miner beans” and corn bread, plus desserts, will be available at no charge.
On Sunday morning, Sept. 5, a worship service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Minden Community Meeting Center, Inc. Scheduled this year is the Rev. Jack Barker, pastor of the Minden Missionary Baptist Church.
At 11 a.m. on Sunday, Minden friends will join together at the Lewis Community Foundation’s Christian Community Center (old National Guard Armory), 469 Central Avenue, Oak Hill, for a buffet dinner at 1 p.m. The charge is $15 per person. Please stop at the information table to sign in and pick up your tickets.
On Sept. 6, those in attendance are invited to take part in the Minden-to-Thurmond Walk along the Mary Ingles Trail. Anyone interested in doing so is asked to please meet at 9 a.m. at the Lewis Community Center. There will be a $5 charge per person, which includes a picnic lunch in Thurmond.
The deadline for reservations is Aug. 26.
