Gardening classes offered at New River

SUMMERSVILLE — The New River Community and Technical College Office of Workforce Education will offer several gardening classes this spring in Summersville.

Instructor Kris Ward will teach three classes: Start Your Own Seeds, Composting Basics and Square Foot Gardening. An avid gardener, Ward brings her real life experiences and knowledge into the classroom to provide insightful and practical knowledge. She has taught several classes for New River, all of which have been very informative and greatly enjoyed by students.

All three classes will be offered at the Workforce WV Building in the Northside Plaza Shopping Center. The cost for each one-session class is $25.

Start Your Own Seeds will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. The focus of this class will be starting seeds inside in order to get an early start on your garden. Maintaining seeds indoors, transplanting them outdoors and harvesting seeds for next year also will be covered.

Square Foot Gardening will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 11. This was a very popular class last year, with many students successfully using the techniques to grow gardens. Ward will discuss how to build a square foot garden and the advantages and benefits of the technique. She also will provide ideas and suggestions for those with small spaces. Students will learn the importance of soil composition, plant selection and placement to ensure thriving plants and pest and rodent management techniques.

Composting Basics will be held on Tuesday, April 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. Compost is often referred to as “garden gold” because of its many benefits. This class will cover various types of composters from homemade to purchased options. Ward will explain how to get started composting and what supplies will be required. The benefits and uses for compost will be discussed, as well as what to compost and what to avoid.

To get more information or register for any of these classes, please call the New River Office of Workforce Education in Summersville at 304-883-2446.
