— The community is invited to recognize six champions of children and Just For Kids’ 10th year of service to the community Dec. 13 at the Just for Kids Annual Champions of Children Recognition Dinner.

Champions of Children are individuals who have gone above and beyond to help children and families in the community, said executive director Scott Miller.

This year Just For Kids is recognizing six individuals from Wyoming, Raleigh and Fayette counties: Detective Sgt. Glen Chapman of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department; Lt. Jim Bare of the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department; Joe Bullington, Region IV regional Department of Health and Human Resources director; Joyce Pitsenbarger, RN, director of education, Raleigh General Hospital; Heather Lucas, Fayette County Child Protective Services supervisor; and Kathy Brunty, director of Wyoming County Family Resource Network.

In addition, Alpha Natural Resources, Two Brothers Collision, Legacy Resources, and the Bickey family will be recognized for their major financial support to Just For Kids.

The event will include dinner, live entertainment, a cash bar, a silent auction and a raffle for a new Apple iPad.

Also at the event, Raleigh County Superintendent of Schools Jim Brown will discuss the collaborative efforts between Just For Kids and the school district to train all school personnel on preventing, identifying and reporting child sexual abuse with the Stewards of Children training.

This collaboration is making a difference in Raleigh County and will be a model for the state on training other school districts, said Miller.

A nationally certified Child Advocacy Center, Just For Kids creates a coordinated, professional team response for helping children alleging criminal child abuse. The office is located in uptown Beckley and provides advocacy, counseling and a child-friendly environment for interviews and therapeutic sessions to help children and families deal with the trauma of abuse.

Just For Kids also maintains offices in Oak Hill and Pineville.

Tickets for the event are available by calling the Just For Kids office, 304-255-4834.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at Mountaineer Conference Center at Country Inn and Suites on Harper Road in Beckley.
