New River Gorge CVB renews accreditation

OAK HILL — The New River Gorge Convention and Visitors Bureau received a perfect score in its most recent accreditation process.

The process helps CVBs be better stewards of their financial responsibilities and the call to action to market and promote an area or destination, says Sharon Cruikshank, executive director of the New River Gorge CVB.

The action renews for three years the accreditation of the New River Gorge CVB, which has been an accredited CVB since the inception of the program in 2006.

Cruikshank says the new accreditation comes at a time when tourists are still traveling to the region in good numbers.

She said that overall lodging for 2011 was up by a little over 8 percent compared to 2010 (first six months of each year served as the comparison) and up 17 percent compared to 2009.

Looking back to 1996, annual lodging is up 84 percent.

In 2011, Ansted was up for the year 26 percent and Oak Hill was down 4 percent from 2010.

The CVB’s website has seen increased traffic, too. There were 31,895 total views compared to this time last year, an increase of 57.95 percent. Of those, 27,011 were total unique visitors, an increase of 55.53 percent.

Search engines were up 63.89 percent, and referring sites were up 15.15 percent.

The numbers don’t lie, Cruikshank said. “Fayette County and the New River Gorge are one of the top destinations on the east coast.”
