OAK HILL —
Richard Lee Adkins of Glen Jean recently donated 265,000 pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern West Virginia (RMHC). Although Adkins has been collecting pop tabs for 20 years, it took him only four years to collect the large amount donated July 17.
Adkins collects the tabs from soda cans by drinking soda, asking neighbors and family members to save tabs, and picking up tabs whenever he sees one laying around. Adkins said he donates the tabs because he enjoys helping others, especially children.
RMHC Executive Director Dewayne Dickens presented Adkins with a framed certificate, and Laura Kiliany, with McDonald’s of Oak Hill, presented him with McDonald’s gift certificates in appreciation of his generous donation.
Pop tabs are easy to collect and allow any individual or community organization to participate. The program provides a terrific opportunity for children to get involved and make a genuine contribution to the Ronald McDonald House. Organizations, businesses and families can participate by pulling tabs off any aluminum beverage container and saving them in a wide-mouth container. The tabs, which then are sold for recycling, can be dropped off at any local participating McDonald’s restaurant or the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston.
The Ronald McDonald House is open to all families regardless of financial status or ability to pay. The House is available for overnight stay, a short nap or rest, or a shower during a day visit. The Ronald McDonald House of Southern West Virginia serves guests/patients of all area hospitals.
