Community service demo project begins

FROM STAFF REPORTS

— The Reaching the Summit Community Service Initiative today will kick off demonstration projects as a “dress rehearsal” in nine counties across the region in preparation for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree Days of Service.

Officials with the Citizens Conservation Corps of West Virginia (CCC) announced the plans Wednesday. Various projects throughout southern West Virginia will be completed by the end of September.

“This demonstration phase of ‘The Initiative’ is an exciting time as this provides the CCC, Scout representatives and local project Champions and volunteers the perfect opportunity to envision how the 2013 National Scout Jamboree Days of Service projects will impact West Virginia,” said Robert Martin, chief executive officer of the CCC.

“The demo projects are a great chance for everyone involved with the Days of Service to plan, develop, manage, and effectively prepare for any problems as we work toward the 2013 National Scout Jamboree Days of Service, less than a year away.”

Nicholas County will kick off the demo projects with its refurbishment of the Veterans Memorial Park in Summersville. Scheduled for three days, Aug. 6-8, the Nicholas County demo projects include the Veterans Memorial Park’s historical Red Barn, the 4-H Kitchen, a public walking trail and landscaping.

“The demo projects will establish an immediate impact in preparation for 2013. It is exciting to see the public and local volunteers take full advantage of this tremendous opportunity as the final projects come to fruition,” Martin said.

Additionally, officials with ‘The Initiative’ will announce the selected 2013 National Scout Jamboree Days of Service projects Oct. 1. For more information, log onto www.rtscsi.com or www.wvccc.com.
