Starcher named interim chief of schools

Dr. Serena Starcher, associate superintendent of administration for Fayette County Schools, has been tapped to serve as the system’s interim superintendent, according to a report from West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

Starcher was chosen by the state Board of Education, which retains control of Fayette County Schools, to serve in the post for six months. The superintendent’s position had been filled by Keith Butcher since July 2012. Butcher resigned late last month to take the superintendent’s job in Nicholas, his home county.

Starcher, who started her career as a teacher in Putnam County, has worked for the county school system for seven years.

She told West Virginia Public Broadcasting that her main focus will be to amend the county’s facilities plan in an effort to lead the county in regaining local control over the system.

“Fayette County and the citizens there and the staff, we long for a return of local control,” she told WVPB in an interview, “so over the next six months I just hope to further our vision of returning [that] control.”
