Hilltop couple arrested in deaths of children

The parents of two Fayette County children who were reported dead inside their home March 11 were arrested Wednesday on charges that they negligently used drugs and alcohol and then slept with their children, causing the two victims’ death by suffocation, Fayette Sheriff’s Capt. Jim Sizemore reported.

The victims were a 3-month-old boy and his 1-year-old sister.

Police arrested Ashley Nicole Penson, 24, and Kyle Ralph Penson, 27, both of the Hilltop area, on the felony charge of child neglect resulting in death following the Monday release of the State Medical Examiner’s Office autopsy reports, according to a press release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

The couple was notified via their attorneys Tuesday that criminal warrants had been issued, officials said.

In March, a search of the Pensons’ mobile home had turned up no evidence of foul play, according to officials.

Fayette Prosecuting Attorney Carl Harris had stated in March that his office had no evidence to arrest the parents and would wait on the results of the autopsy.

A 4-year-old boy in the home was found to be healthy, Sizemore had reported in March.
