City man arrested on sex charges

OAK HILL — Troopers with the West Virginia State Police Oak Hill detachment arrested a Hidden Valley man last Thursday in Fayette County on charges that he sexually abused a minor.

David J. Haggerty, 52, is charged with one count each of first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree sexual assault for incidents involving a 13-year-old boy, Cpl. C.L. Adkins said last week.

Adkins reported that troopers had received an anonymous tip Jan. 5 from a concerned citizen who reported a young boy had been entering Haggerty’s residence at 504 24th Street.

Haggerty is a registered sex offender and is listed on the State Police sex offender registry, said Adkins.

When Adkins and accompanying officer Trooper J.L. Milam investigated, they discovered the boy in Haggerty’s home and removed him.

He reported to police that Haggerty had touched him inappropriately with his hands and mouth on multiple occasions, said Adkins.

Haggerty was an acquaintance of the victim’s family, according to police.

He was arrested and remanded to Southern Regional Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond.

Adkins added that Haggerty had served nearly 15 years in prison from 1997 to 2012 on the exact charges for which he is now at Southern Regional.
