Residents warned of phone scam

People in Fayette County should be careful about people calling their homes and offering them lots of money, according to a press release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Some people in Fayette County have been called by someone saying they work for Publisher’s Clearing House. The person tells people they have won a $1.5 million prize and need to buy a $400 prepaid card and give up certain information if they want to get their money, the release said.

One of the numbers used by the suspects is 876-524-6656, but other numbers might be used, too. If you call that number, someone answers it as “Publisher’s Clearing House.”

The sheriff warns everyone that this is a fraud. All real sweepstakes companies, including the real Publisher’s Clearing House, will never ask you to pay to claim a prize. He says you should never give any money to the person asking for payment or give them any financial information, like bank account or credit card numbers.

If you get a call like this, the police ask that you call your local law enforcement agency.
