Regional forum on child poverty held in Oak Hill

BECKLEY — People crowded the SALS Historic Oak Hill School for the Our Children, Our Future Fayette County Regional Forum on Tuesday evening, Feb. 25.

The forum, chaired by SALS board member Gary Zuckett, provided a chance to gather community members, advocates, and families living in poverty and was one of 12 regional forums organized around the state as part of the Our Children, Our Future Campaign to End Child Poverty.

Nearly 50 people from all walks of life were provided a meal by the Southern Appalachian Labor School and spoke on issues including the need for drug rehabilitation facilities, a higher minimum wage, the need for a Future Fund, and the impact of Medicaid Expansion under the Affordable Care Act.

Senator Ron Miller, who was in attendance, favorably answered several questions on critical issues based on feedback from Our Children, Our Future community meetings and a statewide vote on priorities.  A letter of support from Congressman Nick Joe Rahall was also read and Matt Wender was thanked for support from the Fayette County Commission.

Also attending the event was a group of students from Eastern Michigan University working with SALS on community and housing projects during their spring break.
