FAYETTEVILLE — Members of GFWC Fayetteville Junior Woman’s Club and GFWC Fayetteville Woman’s Club visited Fayetteville Elementary School last week during the Read Across America event to remind FES students of the joys of reading.

The women volunteered their time to read to students during the event, and one member dressed as the Cat in the Hat and brought green eggs and ham to show the children. Members of the Junior Woman’s Club donated 24 Dr. Seuss books, one for each classroom at Fayetteville Elementary, as well as a bookmark for each child.

The National Education Association (NEA) created Read Across America as an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for all children to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. “Children want the same things we want; to laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted,” said Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped millions of kids learn to read. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and in creating lifelong successful readers.

The students and staff of Fayetteville Elementary School thank the Fayetteville Juniors for their continued support each year for this program as well as donations of school supplies at the beginning of the school year and also for recognition during Teacher Appreciation Week. The Fayetteville Juniors support many community projects and help needy families with health and financial problems.  The community service organization will hold its annual fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, at Smokey’s on the Gorge/Class VI. Tickets are available at $35 per person by calling 304-574-6143.
