WRC film screening April 25 in Oak Hill

Sexual assault in one of the most seriously underreported and underprosecuted crimes in our communities. An estimated 72% of victims don’t ever report. That number may seem seriously high, but that statistic is for civilian life only.

The statistics for victim reporting and perpetrator prosecution of sexual assault in the military are even more alarming. The U.S. Department of Defense estimates that less than 14% of military sexual assault survivors actually report the crimes and that in 2011, of the crimes that were reported, less than 6% led to a conviction.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and as part of awareness efforts in their four-county service area, Women’s Resource Center is hosting screenings of The Invisible War. Both a rallying cry for the hundreds of thousands of men and women who've been assaulted and a hopeful road map for change, The Invisible War is one of those rare films so powerful it has already helped change military policy.

The Academy Award-nominated documentary, The Invisible War, is a groundbreaking investigation about one of America’s most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem — today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire.

The public screening for Fayette County will take place on April 25 at 6 p.m. at SALS Historic Oak Hill School located at 140 School Street in Oak Hill. A $5 donation per person is requested. Any monetary donation will be accepted. SALS has donated the space and projection of this documentary.

One hundred percent of donations will benefit the Women’s Resource Center, serving victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas and Summers counties.

This film is not rated, but due to subject matter is intended for mature audiences. Parental guidance is recommended. For more information on The Invisible War public screenings and other Women’s Resource Center community events and services, please visit the website at www.wrcwv.org or call 304-255-2559.
