ANSTED —
The Ansted Middle School football stadium will sport a new look this fall. Alpha Natural Resources’ Republic Energy operation is currently partnering with Fayette County Schools to upgrade and improve the playing field and parking capacity at AMS.
According to Ron Cantley II, the school system’s director of operations, a recent Saturday’s work day included demolition of old, unsafe bleachers, drainage upgrades and seeding.
An old storage building was removed, added Michele Davis, who works with Mary Robinson to direct Republic’s community involvement group. Republic plans to return soon and paint the press box, which was left standing, the restrooms and the concession stand in matching colors.
Medford Trucking donated the equipment the Republic group utilized on its recent work day, Davis said.
When the logistics can be worked out, the project calls for the transfer of aluminum bleachers to the Ansted Middle campus, in addition to expanding the parking area.
“Thanks to the involvement of Alpha Natural Resources, we will see noticeable improvement in the facilities that serve our children,” Cantley said. “Fayette County Schools is also afforded the opportunity to transfer limited resources that we would have utilized on this project to other needs at Ansted and throughout the county.
“We are very grateful for this help. Without Alpha Natural Resources’ involvement, something somewhere for our students would not have gotten accomplished.”
