Volunteers needed to help prepare taxes

Volunteers are needed to help people in Greenbrier, Fayette, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming counties to prepare their tax returns at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites.

The EITC Southern West Virginia Coalition works with the West Virginia Welfare Reform Coalition and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide free, basic income tax preparation services to community members with low-to-moderate incomes.

Trained volunteer tax preparers explain credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and help individuals complete and electronically file their tax returns — all for free. Refunds can be deposited directly into a bank account within seven to 10 days.

Volunteer tax preparers receive free instruction and all training and certification materials necessary to prepare basic income tax returns. Although this may seem like a long way away, now is the time to sign up.

Volunteers are also needed to help in other ways. A volunteer information and orientation meeting will be from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 26 at 228 Ragland Road, Beckley (corner of MountainHeart).

For more information, contact Delana at 1-800-834-7082 or e-mail ddaniels@mountainheartwv.org.

If you or your organization would like to learn more about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) campaign or find out where a VITA site might be near you, go to www.wveitc.com.
