Planter at Blue Star Memorial refurbished

The Blue Star Memorial Marker on Oyler Avenue, near the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the New River Gorge Convention and Visitors Bureau, will have a new planter box, new shrubbery and flowers, thanks to the excellent work of the students of masonry instructor Darrell Fisher.

Fisher, the new masonry instructor at Fayette Institute of Technology, and his students worked proudly several weeks constructing the new red brick planter. Fisher said d that he was honored to work on a project with his students that honored veterans,  and to lend a hand to the local garden clubs.

This Blue Star Memorial Marker was a project many years ago of the late Wanda B. Farrish, Oak Hill Garden Club, and Appalachian District Garden Clubs. The memorial stood stately, but the planter box was cracked on all sides, which did not enhance the beautiful memorial. Woodland Oaks, Scarbro and Redbud garden clubs, located in Oak Hill, will take turns maintaining the beautiful memorial. The Fayette County Garden Council and Appalachian District also contributed to the project.

Woodland Oaks Garden Club just recently planted new shrubbery and flowers.

The memorial is a wonderful tribute to our retired and active military personnel, said Sadie Brash, president of Woodland Oaks Garden Club.
