Thanksgiving harvest food drive under way

The Southern Appalachian Labor School’s food distribution program serves low income families in two locations in Fayette County. The SALS Community Center in Beards Fork distributes food on the second Friday of each month.

The SALS Oak Hill Historic School distributes food on the first Thursday after the first Monday of the month.

Assistance is sought for a Thanksgiving harvest food drive to help feed the hungry children in the area. The goal is to collect 5,000 pounds of food between Oct. 1 through Nov. 10.

However, donations do not have to stop then — non-perishable food will be accepted at any time at either location, Beards Fork or Oak Hill.

Collection sites will be at the Historic Oak Hill School, 140 School St., Oak Hill; SALS Community Center in Beards Fork; and SALS office on W.Va. 61, 1 mile south of the Kincaid Post Office. Arrangements can be made for local pickup. For more information, contacts Vickie Smith at 304-640-3792, Barb Painter at 304-673-6370, Debbie Spurlock at 304-250-7627 or John David at 304-465-9732.

Any non-perishable food items, such as canned meats, canned fruits, canned vegetables, peanut butter, canned meals, boxed meals, beans, pasta, rice and cereals, will be accepted.
