Oak Leaf Festival kicks off Aug. 25


— The 12th annual Oak Leaf Festival will kick off on Wednesday, Aug. 25 with the annual Oak Leaf Tea Festival and conclude Sunday, Sept. 5 with a fireworks display. In the intervening days, a number of activities is scheduled, including some new events for the festival.

Among the new events is a wine and cheese tasting set for Thursday, Aug. 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the White Oak Country Club, and the conversion of the Sweet Taste of Oak Hill dessert contest to the Taste of Oak Hill, with additional categories, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at the Lewis Community Foundation’s Christian Community Center.

7 p.m. — Miss Oak Leaf/Miss Teen Pageant, $, Oak Hill High School auditorium, Oyler Avenue. Miss Oak Leaf winner to go to Fairs & Festivals Pageant

10 a.m. — Raising of the flag and National Anthem, BB&T Bank, Main Street (live performances throughout the day; bring your lawn chair)

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Craft and food vendors, downtown, Main Street

11 a.m. — Oak Leaf Parade, Main Street

12 to 3 p.m. — Barbecue lunch, Lewis Community Center, Central Avenue



12 to 2 p.m. — Plateau Medical Center Health Fair, Lewis House Lawn, Main Street

12 to 4 p.m. — West Virginia Firefighter’s Weekend, Collins football field, Central Avenue

6 to 10 p.m. — Cruise-in and street dance; opening act Elvis impersonator with headliners Hit and Run, one of West Virginia’s premier classic rock bands, performing the best hits of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s music



Sunday, Sept. 5



1 to 4 p.m. —
Music by Hit and Run, sponsored by Jan Care Ambulance, Oak Hill High School, Oyler Avenue

1 to 5 p.m. — Car and bike show, Oak Hill High School, Oyler Avenue

5:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Chili Cook-off, Fayette Institute of Technology, Oyler Avenue

8:30 p.m. — Fireworks display, Oak Hill High School, Oyler Avenue (rain date: Monday, Sept. 6)
