OH Invitational set for Tuesday

The annual Oak Hill Invitational high school track and field meet will be staged on Tuesday, April 9 at John P. Duda Stadium.

The meet will get under way at approximately 3:30 p.m., Oak Hill High coach George Smith says. Several teams from the region are expected to take part.

As the Red Devils move up to the Class AAA level this spring, Smith feels like his team has some good possibilities for 2013.

“It looks good for us,” he said prior to the Easter break. At the time, Smith had a roster of 42, which was down from 56 at season’s start. He’s also having to make do with only one assistant coach, as another coaching position was eliminated.

Several runners from the school’s successful cross country squad, including Tony Tredway and Cody Gillespie, are back to anchor the middle-distance and distance events on the boys side, and a soccer player, Ian Hunt, is also expected to perform well in the 800-meter run.

Smith is also predicting great things from senior sprinter Jovare Brown, who missed last year. If Brown “stays on course,” Smith expects a very high finish in the 400 at the state meet in May.

Distance and middle-distance runners Sierra Seay and Erin Heeter should make strong showings, and some field events participants return from last year, as well.

“We have a good group of freshmen and sophomores,” Smith said.
