Good Hope Baptist Homecoming slated

— Good Hope Baptist Church at Graydon will celebrate an old fashioned Homecoming on Sept. 15 at 12 p.m. A gospel message will be delivered at 2 p.m. by John Parrish, guest minister.

Good Hope, which was organized May 9, 1868, by Eli Wood and W. McGraw, was closed for about three years before its doors reopened on May 25 of this year.

There will be dinner on the grounds and anyone who is able is requested to please bring a covered dish and a lawn chair. All day singing is planned and musicians are welcome.

Many West Virginia residents and those in nearby states have family and friends buried in the Good Hope Church Cemetery and all those individuals are invited to attend the Homecoming reunion and share memories, pictures and stories. A partial list of families who were members of the church and represented in the cemetery includes Adkins, Adkinson, Atkins, Atkinson, Bailes, Barker, Bennett, Bickford, Blackwell, Boggus, Bowles, Bowling, Bragg, Brown, Burdette, Beury, Bryant, Campbell, Chapman, Clendenin, Coleman, Comer, Cottrell, Cowles, Crawford, Creger, Crookshanks, DeLung, Dock, Durrett, Eagle, Edds, Ellison, Erskin, Evans, Ewing, Fields, Fitzwater, Fine, Fleshman, Fletcher, Fox, French, Gill, Grimmitt, Grose, Hall, Hawkins, Heald, Hedrick, Hendricks, Holcomb, Holliday, Holly, Hundley, Hunt, Jarvis, Jones, Joplin, Jordan, Judy, Keel, Keenan, Kesler, Kincaid, Kious, Knapp, LaMasters, Lane, LeMasters, Malcolm, Martin, Masters, McCoy, McGraw, McKnight, Meadows, MIller, Mills, Morris, Moses, Moye, Murphy, Myers, Naylor, Neal, Neff, Nelson, Nickell, Nida, Nobel, Parrish, Pennington, Ramsey, Rose, Sandage, Settle, Sewell, Shuff, Sevy, Silva, Silvey, Simms, Skaggs, Smailes, Small, Strunk, Stull, Sweet, Thomas, Timberlake, Tincher, Toney, West, White, Whorle, Wilson, Williams, Willis, Withrow, Wood, Workman, Young and Zimmerman.

If you do not have a home church or if you do not attend any church, you are invited to visit Good Hope Baptist Church; you may find it is exactly what you are looking for. Currently, services are held only on Sunday, with Bible class at 10 a.m., morning worship service at 11 a.m. and evening service at 6 p.m.

Directions to the church: If you are traveling from Hico on Rt. 60, go south on Rt. 19, turn right at the second exit onto the Milroy Grose Rd. If you are traveling from Fayetteville, go north on Rt. 19, crossing the New River Gorge Bridge and go to the second exit (excluding the NPS exit) and turn left onto the Milroy Grose Rd. Go about 1⁄4 mile to the bottom of the hill. Turn an immediate right on the sharp curve onto a dirt/graveled road.  There are signs pointing the way. Go about 1/10 of a mile and bear to the right and up the hill. Continue for about 1⁄2 mile and the church is situated at the top of the hill on the right.
