The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will be increasing DUI enforcement efforts this month. In coordination with this effort, Sheriff Steve Kessler announced a scheduled sobriety checkpoint.
The Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in the Valley District on Friday, Oct. 26. This checkpoint will be operated in conjunction with the Smithers Police Department and will run from 9 p.m. until 3 a.m. The primary enforcement area will be U.S. Route 60 in Smithers, with the alternate area on WV Route 61 in the Mount Carbon area.
“Deputies will be looking not only for impaired drivers, but for other traffic violations at this checkpoint as well,” Kessler said. “We will be checking for valid driver’s licenses, motor vehicle inspection stickers, mandatory insurance requirements, equipment violations, seatbelt usage and other safety violations.
“Deputies will also be on the lookout for drivers approaching or traveling through the checkpoint who are sending or receiving text messages while driving. Our primary efforts in this regard are to improve the level of highway safety in the Valley District of Fayette County.”
In addition to this scheduled checkpoint, deputies also will be conducting extra patrols throughout the month of October specifically to target impaired drivers. These roving patrols will be in operation throughout all areas of the county.
This checkpoint and these extra patrols are being funded through a grant received from the Southern Regional Highway Safety Program.
