Outdoor mural to be celebrated

FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville Arts Coalition invites the community to a celebration of Fayetteville’s first outdoor mural on Friday evening.

“This is our gift to the community and we would love to see everyone,” says Shea Wells, president of the coalition.

Painted by Charleston artist Rob Cleland, the mural brightly depicts some of the signature features of Fayetteville, like its historic courthouse and nearby outdoor recreation.

“The mural is a town plunked down in the middle of natural surroundings,” says Cleland. “I hope it conveys the idea that there’s a town in a beautiful recreation spot.”

It greets visitors heading into town from its spot on the Fayetteville Physical Therapy building on Court Street.

The mural is part of the Fayetteville Arts Coalition’s (FAC) “Art in Sight” initiative, which aims to install one mural or sculpture annually in prominent locations around town.

The coalition is currently working to install a sculpture by renowned West Virginia metal worker Jeff Fetty at the intersection of Keller Avenue and Court Street.

Friday evening’s event features homemade jambalaya by the building’s owner, Truett Harris; live music by the Danz Brothers; a silent art auction to benefit the coalition; and a chance to meet Cleland.

“This is a great accomplishment for our community and we hope to see everyone there,” says Wells. “(There will be) free food and the mural artist will be there in front of his completed masterpiece.

The reveal will take place at 5 p.m. at the Fayetteville Physical Therapy building parking lot on Court Street.

Afterwards, the FAC invites the community back to its new retail cooperative location, above the Secret Sandwich Society on Keller Avenue.

The goal of FAC is to “create a sustainable arts community that supports local artists, creates art awareness and fosters artistic growth and education.” It was founded in 2011 by Wells.
