FRN meets in Oak Hill

— Fayette County Resource Network recently had it monthly meeting at the DHHR in Oak Hill. This group of people and agencies meet to work together to help families in Fayette County. There were 25 members present.

Representatives of the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council gave the program. It was the culminating event report back on the activities completed in regard to the $5,000 grant received to do tobacco education and prevention. Attendees watched a video of the skit the scouts performed at the Historic Fayette Theater in June.

There are three sub-committees of the FRN: Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention, Substance Abuse Task Force, and Tobacco Prevention.

Following is a brief rundown of ongoing activities:

-- FMRS/ASPEN is always taking referrals for those facing possible suicide or drug issues. You -- New River Health is collecting lotion for Pine Haven Homeless Shelter in Beckley. To help, contact  donnabush

-- MIHOW home visitors support mothers during pregnancy, provide education, encourage good nutrition, Referrals may be faxed to 304-469-2415.

-- WVU Extension/4-H Clubs are forming, offering canning classes, and master gardening classes are coming up as well. Call 304-574-4253 for details.

-- SALS is looking for youth for the YouthBuild Academy. Applicants must be a high school drop-out and between the ages of 16-24. Call 304-779-2772 for details. Also, the Historic Oak Hill School is available for meetings or parties. Call 304-465-4246 for more.

-- Rainelle Medical Center is starting sex education in local high schools. For info, call 304-619-2126.

-- The Fayette-Nicholas Chapter of the American Red Cross issued a reminder that volunteers and blood donations are needed. Call 304-469-4636 for more.

-- Carelink’s Teddy Bear Fair will be held Oct. 6  in the parking lot of CAMC Women’s and Children’s Hospital from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
