SALS to support rural housing for veterans

— The Housing Assistance Council has awarded the Southern Appalachian School (SALS) a special grant to support affordable housing for rural veterans.

The funding, which comes through the Home Depot Foundation and provides building materials, will permit SALS Housing to focus on home repairs, rehabs and new-builds to make sure that veterans reside in a safe, accessible and habitable residence.

According to Vickie Smith, SALS construction manager, veterans often have special needs, such as wheelchair ramps and wide door entries, that are not addressed in available rural housing. She noted  since West Virginia has a high proportion of the population that has served in the armed forces, it is respectful that veterans have a safe and decent residence in their communities.

Those desiring further information should contact SALS at 304-465-9732 or 304-442-3156.
