Fayetteville Wal-mart hosted a celebration of our veterans on Saturday, Nov. 10. Pat Alton, store manager, was the host. Guest speaker was Pastor Ron George from Lovers Leap Baptist Church, and singers were Deputy Rob Legg and Saundra Tucker.
The ceremony was opening by the presentation of the flag by Boy Scout Troop 600 from Lookout and the Pledge of Allegience was led by Deputy Legg. Sen. William R. Laird IV and Del. David Perry presented the store with a certificate from the Department of Defense for Wal-mart’s involvment in helping our veterans.
Associate Larry Hamlin, a Vietnam veteran, spoke of moments of the war that will forever be etched into his mind and then read a proclamation from President Obama. Senator Laird helped the store manager present certificates to the store’s 16 veterans (five from Vietnam).
As the ceremony wound down guests were escorted outside by Troop 600 to where the Oak Hill VFW Post did the 21-gun salute and roll call. Refreshments were served immediately after.
Lynn Lucas, the event coorindator, would like to thank all who came and helped to honor our military, Sen. Laird, Del. Perry, Rob Legg, Saundra Tucker, Pastor Ron George, Roy Smith and the VFW Post 3110, Patricia Dickerson and Troop 600 and all the associates who helped. She hopes the ceremony will be an annual event.
