AmeriCorps Vista members with the Coal Heritage Highway Authority will conduct a food drive of non-perishable items on Friday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Fayetteville Wal-Mart and Oak Hill Kroger.
The overwhelming demand for food as a result of the June 29 storm has left local food pantries depleted with no food for distribution to families in need. Even nearly two months after the storm, food pantries are still facing shortages. Food collected will be delivered to locally operated food pantries in Raleigh, Summers, Fayette, Nicholas, Greenbrier, and Wyoming counties to be distributed.
Suggested non-perishable items to donate include canned fruits, canned vegetables, canned meats (chicken, tuna, salmon), canned soups (with pop tops), beef stew and chili, peanut butter, dry cereals, oatmeal, cream of wheat, baby food, formula, diapers, and shelf-stable milk.
AmeriCorps Vista members will be in front of the Wal-Mart and Kroger store entrances to accept donations.
This is the second food drive held by the AmeriCorps Vistas with the Coal Heritage Highway Authority. The previous food drive was on Monday, July 9 in Beckley in front of the Kroger and Big Lots. The food drive collected over 1,200 items, ranging from canned beans to baby items.
There is still “definitely a great need,” according to Rebecca Cyrus, the director of Good News Outreach Mission and its food bank in Meadow Bridge. “We gave out a lot, with feeding everybody, and we’re kind of low.”
According to Christy Bailey, executive director of the Coal Heritage Highway Authority, “We know that even now the power has been restored, there are many needs that remain to be met. Our Vista members have been assisting in their local communities, but we think this is a good opportunity to help our local food pantries replenish their supplies and continue to assist families. We encourage everyone who has been looking for a way to help out, to stop by and drop off non-perishable items to be used throughout the region. All donations, large and small, will be appreciated and will help feed families in need.”
