Red Cross supporting National Scout Jamboree

BECKLEY — The American Red Cross West Virginia Region is supporting the Boy Scouts of America National Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. The 2013 National Jamboree hosts the first ever community service component, Reaching the Summit Community Service Initiative.

The initiative is led by a group of community leaders, with support from the Citizens Conservation Corps of West Virginia (CCCWV), from Southern West Virginia who identified almost 350 community service project sites. In total, 40,000 Boy Scouts will be performing 300,000 hours of community service in a nine-county region including Fayette, Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Nicholas, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming counties.

The American Red Cross supports the operation by distributing water to community service sites for the five days of service to ensure hydration of all Scouts and volunteers.

Nearly a hundred American Red Cross volunteers are mobilized to distribute more than 100,000 bottles of water to the community service project sites. This effort is being accomplished in partnership with the Beckley Dream Center, the Church of God Family Worship in Beckley, Sheetz, Volunteer West Virginia and the Citizens Conservation Corps of West Virginia.
