Make a difference

Readers urged to take action: Get out and vote!

There is no better time than now to take an active role in determining the future of your town, state and nation.

With early voting under way, we strongly encourage our readers to get out and vote.

Early voting is now available in all 55 counties through Saturday, Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6.

The early voting period still includes one Saturdays, Nov. 3.

No matter what day you decide to do it, casting your ballot is of extreme importance.

We should not let a little over half of our registered voters decide our representatives. Overall turnout for the 2008 General Election was 58.7 percent in West Virginia.

That could certainly improve.

There are 1,246,559 registered voters in West Virginia, eligible to vote in this election. Our state can get the attention of state and national leaders by simply showing up at the polls, sending a message that we care about our state deeply.

The benefits of democracy in the United States include the rights our citizens enjoy, and casting a ballot is one of the strongest voices we can have.

And we must not take it for granted.

Feeling apathetic should not be an option.

Educate yourself about the issues and candidates and enjoy the liberties for which so many of our forefathers fought and died.

There is no shortage of opinions floating around about the direction our state and nation is heading. But talk is cheap.

Take action and head out to your polling place.

Make a solid statement.

Your ballot is your voice.
