Daughter of Mount Hope couple named national scholarship finalist

MOUNT HOPE — A senior at Woodrow Wilson High School was named as a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist. Adelina Lancianese was selected by the staff of Rhododendron Girls State which was held July 10-15 at Wheeling Jesuit University.

In making the announcement the selection officials said Lancianese was named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist on the basis of academics, school and community involvement, and financial need.

As a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist, Lancianese will join 99 other national finalists around the United States each competing for one of 12 scholarships, each worth an expected $20,000.

Lancianese is extremely active in her school and community. She is a current member of Woodrow Wilson High School’s National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, and bowling club. She has also written for The Eagle Dispatch.

Outside of school, Lancianese participates in the Raleigh County Teen Court and is an eight-year violin student. In June, she attended College Summit in Fairmont and will attend Governor’s Honors Academy in July. Although undecided on which college she will apply to, Lancianese would like to major in law, political science, or international relations.

The Samsung American Legion Scholarship funds come from the earnings of a $5-million endowment given by Samsung. Samsung, in recognition of the sacrifice and commitment of United States servicemen and women who served during the Korean War to maintain the security of the Korean peninsula, joined with The American Legion to offer an educational opportunity to the descendants of war-time veterans who have served honorably.

Lancianese is the daughter of Scott and Vickie of Mount Hope and the granddaughter of Pasco and June Lancianese of Bradley. Her grandfather, Pasco, served with the army during the Korean War.

The president and chief executive officer of Samsung North America, Dong-Jin Oh, says Samsung wants to recognize “the sacrifices and commitment of U.S. servicemen and women. We believe this is the best way to show our appreciation to the United States and to U.S. war veterans.”

Members of the Rhododendron Girls State selection committee said the selection process was difficult. The applicants were some of the best-qualified students in the state and the competition was keen. Lancianese has similar regards for The American Legion.

“The experience truly changed my life,” she explained. “Not only was I blessed to receive their $1,000 scholarship, but I gained a greater appreciation for our country and flag, as well as made lifelong friends.”
