Meetings

Fayette Beekeepers Association — Attention beekeepers: If you are just getting started or have enjoyed beekeeping for years, there will be a meeting on Monday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville. The purpose of the Beekeepers Association is to provide membership with interesting and practical information about honey bees and the “how-to’s” of beekeeping. The association also provides the general public with educational programs about honey bees and the benefits of bees and beekeeping in the communities. Fayette County Democratic Executive Committee — The Fayette County Democratic Executive Committee will meet Thursday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Fayette County Courthouse for a regular meeting.  All registered Fayette County Democrats are welcome to attend. Caregiver Support Group — The Caregiver Support Group at the Oak Hill Senior Center has scheduled several upcoming sessions as follows: Monday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. — How to Manage Medications.

Oak Hill Rotary — The Oak Hill Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at noon at the LifeBridge Fellowship Hall in East End Oak Hill. Call 304-640-1497 for more information. The first Tuesday of each month is Business Meeting day, and each following Tuesday has a member program scheduled, with guests invited to visit.

Board of Education — The Fayette County Board of Education will convene as follows: regular meeting — Monday, Aug. 20, BOE office, 6 p.m.

Fayette County Commission — The Fayette County Commission will meet Friday, Aug. 31 (regular); Friday, Sept 14. (regular); Friday, Sept. 28 (regular); Friday, Oct. 12 (regular); Friday, Oct. 26 (regular); Friday, Nov. 2 (regular); Tuesday, Nov. 6 (General Election); Tuesday, Nov. 13 (special, canvass, General Election); Friday, Nov. 16 (regular); Friday, Nov. 30 (regular); Friday, Dec. 7 (regular); Friday, Dec. 14 (regular, Courthouse Christmas dinner) at 9 a.m. in the Fayette County Commission chambers of the Fayette County Courthouse. The meetings are open to the public.

 



Announcements

Food Pantry — The Ministerial Association Food Pantry will distribute food to those who qualify on Aug. 22 at the Lewis Community Foundation Christian Community Center (the old Armory) on Central Ave., Oak Hill, from 9 to 11 a.m. Please bring identification and proof of current address. If you are unsure of the qualifications, come and talk to one of the workers. This service to the area is sponsored by the Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association.

Church

Church Anniversary-Homecoming — The Outreach for Christ Christian Center at 416 G Street in Beckley will host special services to celebrate its anniversary and Homecoming. Services scheduled are as follows: Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7  p.m., speaker Pastor Donald Cook of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Lanark; Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m., speaker Pastor William Fruit of Sky Baptist Church, South Fayette St., Beckley; Saturday, Aug. 25, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., New River Park, Shelter 1, Beckley; Sunday, Aug. 26, 11 a.m., speaker Minister Harold Hairston, formerly of Beckley; and Sunday, Aug. 26, 3 p.m., speaker Pastor Paul Baker of Harlem Heights Baptist Church, Harlem Heights. Dinner will be served after the Sunday morning service at 1 p.m. Host pastor is Thomas Steelman.

Fun Day — The First Presbyterian Church, 250 Central Avenue, Oak Hill, invites children ages kindergarten through 4th grade to “A Fun Day,” Sept. 8, at the church, from 12 to 9 p.m. A healthy lunch and snacks throughout the day will be served. A field trip is being planned. Parents may attend or give their approval for this trip. There will be activities such as games, singing, Bible story time, crafts and Christian fun for all. Fundraisers

Community Yard Sale — The Twin Oaks Plaza community yard sale will be held Sept. 6-7 beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day. There will be lots of household items.

Fall Rummage Sale — The Goldeneers annual fall rummage sale will take place Sept. 7-8, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day, in the O.C. Rushing Center at the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene. For sale also will be the group’s hot dogs, barbecues and beans and cornbread, and, as always, a great selection of homemade baked goods. Come find great bargains, good food and fellowship, and enjoy the days. Thanks for supporting your senior citizens.

Yard Sale — The Fayetteville United Methodist Women will have a yard sale on Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. This event will be held in Friendship Hall at the church on the corner of Wiseman Avenue and High Street in Fayetteville. In addition to the yard sale, there will be hot dogs and a bake sale. Come browse the sale items and enjoy some hot dogs while you’re there. This will be the same Saturday when the Fayette County Farmer’s Market will be open and other activities will be going on in town, so come and enjoy the day.

 



Reunions

Minden Reunion — The 32nd anniversary (1981-2012) of the Minden Reunion will be celebrated on Labor Day weekend (Saturday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 3). An annual event for both current and former residents of Minden, the reunion kicks off with a Saturday get-together on Sept. 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Minden Community Meeting Center, Inc. in Minden. “Coal miner’s” pinto beans, corn bread, onions and desserts will be served at no charge. On Sunday morning, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m., a worship service will be held at the Minden Community Meeting Center, Inc. in Minden. Also, at 12 noon on Sunday, Minden friends will join together at the Lewis Community Christian Center (formerly, the National Guard Armory), 469 Central Avenue, Oak Hill, for a buffet at 1 p.m. and more fellowship, plus door prizes. The charge for the buffet is $16 per person. Please stop at the information desk to sign in and pick up your tickets. If you plan to walk on the “Minden-to-Thurmond Walk” along the Mary Ingles Trail on Monday morning, Sept. 3, please meet at 9 a.m. at the Lewis Community Christian Center. A $5 charge per person includes both the walk and a picnic lunch in Thurmond. The deadline for reservations is Aug. 26.     A federal judge has rejected a $65,000 settlement offer in a case involving the alleged rape of a young girl at the former Mount Hope High School, while at the same time throwing out negligence claims against one of the teachers originally listed in the suit.

    The Fayette County Farmers Market is open each Saturday in Fayetteville from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. The market is located in the parking lot of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau at the entrance to Fayetteville. The market will be held every Saturday at that location through November.

  • Page-Kincaid recognizes Grant’s 30 years of service

    Mary Grant, the bookkeeper/cashier at the Page-Kincaid PSD for 30 years, retired in early April. Mary started with the PSD in 1983 as the cashier, working with the PSD’s former bookkeeper Dorothy Jeffers. Upon the retirement of Dorothy Jeffers, Mary assumed the duties of bookkeeper and office manager in 2008. Mary also possessed a Class I water operator license and served in a back-up capacity to Bart Jackson.
