The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) is seeking entries for the 2013 Agritourism Media Awards. The purpose of the annual awards is to celebrate and recognize excellence in advertising and promotion of West Virginia agritourism destinations and attractions. There is no entry fee. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 15, 2013.
The winners will be honored at the West Virginia Small Farms Conference at The Waterfront Hotel in Morgantown, Feb. 28 through March 2.
“Diversifying agricultural operations and extended seasons are tremendous benefits for adding agritourism to our West Virginia small farms,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass.
“Our rural communities have a product that appeals to travelers and can become an additional source of on-farm revenue.”
WVDA Marketing and Development Director Jean Smith said that all segments of the farm community can take advantage of the interest in agritourism.
“Whether you choose to open your farm up as a bed and breakfast destination or participate with local retailers to provide products for sale, agritourism can benefit the profitability of your operation,” Smith said.
Categories include brochures, rack cards, photos and websites. Ribbons will be presented during the conference luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 28.
Entry materials must be mailed to WVDA Parkersburg Field Office, 1412 Blizzard Drive, Parkersburg, WV 26101, and be postmarked no later than Feb. 15. Entries will be displayed for the duration of the Small Farms Conference and submissions and ribbons will be mailed back afterward.
