Thomas H. ‘Tom’ Adkins
Thomas Harvey “Tom” Adkins, 85, of Gatewood, died Jan. 11, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center.
Born July 21, 1922, at Beury Mountain, he was the son of the late Walter Clifton Adkins and Hattie Eagle Adkins.
Mr. Adkins was a disabled World War II Army veteran and a retired coal miner. He was a member of the American Legion Post 149, Fayetteville.
Surviving: his wife of 60 years, Betty Jean Helmick Adkins of Gatewood; son, Mick Adkins and wife, Marlene, of Oak Hill; daughters, Sherry Asire and husband, Robert, of South Carolina, and Drema Johnson and husband, James, of Gatewood; brother, Arnold Adkins of Gatewood; sister, Margaret Tigner of Ohio; grandsons, “Skeeter” Adkins of South Carolina, Jason Adkins of Oak Hill, and Justin Johnson of Gatewood; granddaughter, LaDonna Bryant and husband of Oak Hill; and great-grandchildren, Destiny, Kindall, and Warren Bryant.
A celebration of his life was held Jan. 16, 2008, at the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial followed in the Bibb Cemetery, Rt. 1, Fayetteville.

Russell E. Bennett Sr.
Russell Edward Bennett Sr., 87, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 9, 2008, in a Charleston area nursing home following a long illness.
Born March 18, 1920, at Wickham, he was the son of the late William Johnny and Rheba Brogan Bennett. He also was preceded in death by four brothers, William Blueford William, Robert Wriston, William Howard “Mike” and Ronald Bennett; and two sisters, Margaret Radford and Marcella Blankenship.
In service to his country he bravely answered the call to protect our freedom during World War II. He was a Bronze Star recipient and combat infantryman with Company B, 71st Infantry, 44th Division, and served in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaign of Austria and Germany, among others. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3110, Oak Hill.
Mr. Bennett was a member of New Salem Baptist Church at Abraham.
Surviving: his former wife and dearest friend, Josephine Bennett of Oak Hill; a son, Russell E. Bennett Jr. of Charleston; two loved grandsons, Russell E. Bennett III and Jason Blair Bennett of Weirton; cherished great-grandchildren, Matthew and Josafina; and a brother, Stephen R. Bennett of Raleigh.
Funeral service was Jan. 13 at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. John W. Richmond Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Goodson Cemetery No. 1, Bragg.

Rose Catherine Ceprich Downing
Rose Catherine Ceprich Downing, 75, of Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, died Jan. 10, 2008, at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va.
Born April 1, 1932, at Whipple, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary Magdalene Alexknovitch Ceprich. Her husband, Lawrence Downing, and a brother, Louis Franklin Walter Ceprich, also preceded her in death.
She was the retired owner/inspector for an auto transmission company.
Rose was a life-long member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, and a volunteer for the American Red Cross bloodmobile.
Surviving: daughter, Debra Furr and husband, Dave, of Bunker Hill; sister, Mary Lou Shanks of Oak Hill; grandsons, Donald Johnson of Charles Town, and Steven Coburn and James Coburn, both of Bunker Hill; great-grandchildren, Trinity, Emily, Kaitlynn and Jason; nephew, Johnny C. Shanks II of Oak Hill; niece, Catherine Thomas of Newport News, Va.; and her cherished companion, Mindy.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill, with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Her cremains will be placed in a niche at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Friends may call one-half hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 123 Elmore Street, Oak Hill WV 25901, or the charity of your choice.

Bobby Ray Facello
Bobby Ray Facello, 67, of Baltimore, Md., died Jan. 6, 2008, following a long illness.
Born April 2, 1940, at Maple Fork, he was the son of the late James and Goldie Lovelace Facello. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest, Henry, Ronald and Kenny Facello; and a sister Clara Facello.
Bobby was retired from Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore. He was an active member of Peninsula Baptist Church.
Surviving: his wife, Shirley Steele Facello; a son, Dr. Michael Facello and his wife, Denise, and a grandson, Joshua, all of Raleigh, N.C.; brothers, Frank and Wayne Facello, both of Maple Fork, and Roger, Johnnie and Charles Facello, all of Baltimore; and sisters, JoAnn Mira of Oak Hill and Phyllis Kinder of Norfolk, Va.
Funeral service was Jan. 9 at Connelly Funeral Home, Essex, Md.

Ernest Raymond Foster
Ernest Raymond Foster, 82, of Mount Hope, formerly of Minerva, died Jan. 9, 2008, at Aultman Hospital.
Born Nov. 7, 1925, in Patrick Springs, Va., he was the son of the late Robert and Mary Ruth (Castle) Foster. Ernest also was preceded in death by brothers, Roy Foster, Claude Foster, Robert Foster and Melvin Foster; and a sister, Ollie Mae Lener.
Mr. Foster worked as a truck driver at Artem Transportation and was a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church of Oak Hill.
Surviving: daughters, Velma (Dale) Riter of Canton, Ohio, Linda Abel of Carrollton, Brenda (Joe) McFadden of Minerva, Ohio, and Marianna (Carl) Murphy of Canton; sons, Ray Foster of Wichita, Kan., Jim Foster of Madison, Fla., and Tom Foster of Tennessee; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Bragg of Scarbro; and two brothers, Jesse Foster and Frank Foster, both of Oak Hill.
Funeral service was Jan. 15 at Bartley Funeral Home, Minerva, with Pastor Howard Sebrell officiating. Burial was in Sunset Hills Burial Park.

Opal Virginia Mankin Gilbert
Opal Virginia Mankin Gilbert, 92, of Conway, S.C., formerly of Oak Hill, died Jan. 11, 2008, at the home of her niece, Betty Presson.
Born Feb. 15, 1915, at Bolt, she was the fifth daughter of the late Clyde Arkle and Mary Elsie Backus Mankin. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee Gilbert, on Jan. 7, 1998; and four sisters, Mabel Ramey, Pearl Allen, Clarice McDonald and Nellie Simms.
Mrs. Gilbert was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was part owner of the Mankin Sisters’ Dress Shop in Oak Hill for many years.
She was a 1933 graduate of Oak Hill High School.
Surviving: a sister, Mary Mankin, who also makes her home in Conway; and two nieces and four nephews, Betty Presson and family of Conway, Elsie Mae Davis and family of Ellerslie, Ga., Ray Simms and family of Shady Spring, Skip Ramey and family of Charleston, Gene Allen of Mabscott and John Allen and family of Oak Hill.
The family will have a private burial at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Madge Gilkeson Haynes
Madge Gilkeson Haynes, 96, of Sidney, Ohio, formerly of Rainelle, died Jan. 7, 2008, at Dorothy Love Nursing Home following a long illness.
Born Sept. 14, 1911, at Spring Dale, she was the daughter of the late Samuel T. and Effie Jane Miller Gilkeson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur C. “Jim” Haynes, in 1981; five sisters and three brothers.
Madge was a member of Rainelle United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, White Shrines and a charter member of Business & Professional Women’s Club. She was co-owner (with her husband) of Haynes Radio & Refrigeration Service in Rainelle.
Surviving: a son, James Richard “Dick” Haynes and wife, Dottie, of Piqua, Ohio; grandchildren, Rhonda Everitt and husband, James Mikel, of Mason, Ohio, and Janine Owen and husband, Chris, of Knoxville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Zachary Curtner of Fairborn, Ohio, Spencer Everitt and Zane Everitt of Riverside, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Service was Jan. 11 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Stanley Clark officiating. Entombment followed at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville.

Ola Morton
Ola Morton, 90, of Meadow Bridge, died Jan. 11, 2008, at Sunbridge Pine Lodge Care and Rehab Center of Beckley following a long illness.
Born July 4, 1917, at Rainelle, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Ida Stenson Nicely.
Ola enjoyed gardening and had worked as a cook at Tastee-Freez and Thelma’s Restaurant.
Surviving: daughters, Marie Akers of Laurelville, Ohio, and Merline Harrison of Lockbourne, Ohio; sons, Richard Morton of Meadow Bridge and Ellis Morton of Columbus, Ohio; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Service was Jan. 15 at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Mark Spence officiating. Entombment followed at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville.

Elmer Osborne
Elmer Osborne, 82, of Mount Hope, died Jan. 11, 2007, at the VA Medical Center in Beckley.
Born May 6, 1925, he was the son of the late Mack and Jennie Sawyers Osborne of Marvin in Buchannan County, Va. Elmer also was preceded in death by his beloved brothers, Tom, King, Noah and Robert Osborne; and sisters, Nanny Elswick, Molly Webb, Tiny Rasnake and Kathryn Powers.
Elmer served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He received honors for Purple Heart, Good Conduct, World War Victory Ribbon, and Parachutist Badge 505th Infantry in the European Theatre of Operations. He entered his military life Oct. 25, 1943, and was honorably discharged Feb. 28, 1946.
Early in his life, Brother Elmer sang and played the fiddle with the Virginia Mountain Rangers String Band on WRIC, Richlands, Va.
Brother Elmer dedicated his life to the Lord, serving God for over 52 years. He was the prayer support behind every ministry of his wife, Dorothy, from pastor, evangelist, TV, and radio ministry with WOAY for 29 years. They recently entered into TV ministry with the “Spirit of Victory” program at LFTV in Abington, Va.
Surviving: his beloved wife of 46 years, Rev. Dorothy Osborne; step-daughter, Carol St. Clair and husband, William, of Norfolk, Va.; step-son, Jefferson H. Oliver and wife, Glenna, of Lewisberry, Pa.; grandchildren, Wanda Lewis and husband, Mark, of Lake-in-the Hills, Ill., Sonja Sedgh and husband, Amir, and Stacy Baber and husband, Hans, all of Jacksonville, Fla., Shannon Cherian and husband, Roy, of Algonquin, Ill., Nathan St. Clair of Scarbro, and Teresa Fulton and husband, Brian, of Parachuto, Colo.; his sister, Daisy Burke of Raven, Va.; brother, Tivis Osborne and wife, Judy, of Cedar Bluff, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The celebration of the life of Brother Elmer was Jan. 18 at the LifeBridge Assembly of God, Oak Hill (across from King Coal Chevrolet), with Rev. Darrell Stapleton officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Bobby Milo Phillips
Bobby Milo Phillips, 75, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 11, 2008, at Nicholas County Nursing and Rehab Center.
Born Dec. 31, 1932, at Coal City, he was the son of the late Clinton and Clara Jervis Phillips of Daniels.
Mr. Phillips was a 1951 graduate of Stoco High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force, 82nd Airborne Division, during the Korean Conflict.
He lived most of his life in Lake Charles, La. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving: a brother, William H. Phillips and his wife, Jeanette, of Daniels; a sister, Dorothy C. Martin of Oak Hill; nephews, David Phillips and wife, Gily, of Orlando, Fla., Mark T. Martin and wife, Merena, of Beckley, Mark T. Martin II of Oak Hill, and Matthew Stafford of Prosperity; nieces, Laura Phillips Bodgan and husband, Chris, of Orlando, and Kelley Martin Brogan of Prosperity; and special friend, Lenora Phillips of Beckley.
Funeral service was Jan. 14 at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Wayne Peters officiating. Burial followed in Williams Cemetery, White Oak.

Michael ‘Mike’ Joseph Simmons
Michael “Mike” Joseph Simmons, 57, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 9, 2008, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, following a sudden illness.
Born Nov. 2, 1950, at Montgomery, he was the son of Garland J. “Mutt” Simmons of Oak Hill and the late Mildred Lydia Ladoucer Simmons. A brother, Terry Simmons, also preceded him in death.
Mike was of the Christian faith. He was a musician.
Surviving, in addition to his father: his wife, Martha B. Crane Simmons; and a brother, Charles “Chuck” Simmons of Oak Hill.
Service was Jan. 12 at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Hall, the Rev. William Slates and the Rev. Ellen File officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Clara Belle Estep Smith
Clara Belle Estep Smith, 69, of Oak Hill, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Divison, Charleston.
Born April 13, 1938, at Beckwith, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Lee and Laura Belle Sparks Estep. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Smith; son, Ricky Ray Smith; brother, Leonard Ray Estep; and sister, Lena Katheryn Bonham.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker.
Surviving: sons, Robert Lee Smith Jr. of Albion, Pa., David Michael Smith of Gahanna, Ohio, Harry Wayne Smith of Oak Hill, Donald Lee Smith and Ronald Ray Smith, both of Parma, Ohio, and Jerry Allen Smith of Oak Hill; daughters, Drema Sue Tidd of Centre, Ala., Linda Kay Smith of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Katherine Ann Williams of Albion; brother, Edgar Lee Estep of Salt Fork; a special sister-in-law, Ruth Skaggs Marcum of Oak Hill; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Ann Worlledge
Elizabeth Ann Worlledge, 73, of Glen Jean, died Jan. 9, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born Feb. 15, 1934, at Powellton, she was the daughter of the late Jim Mynus and Grace Hyslop.
Elizabeth was a CNA and had worked for the Hilltop Center.
She was a longtime member of Oak Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving: her husband of 54 years, Riley Edward Worlledge; her children, Mary Ann Worlledge Jackson of Deltona, Fla., Donna Worlledge Tiller and husband, David, of Shacklefords, Va., and Michael Edward Worlledge and wife, Beverly, of Deltona, Fla.; her grandchildren, Shannon Lea Jackson and companion, Kevin Dean Robbins, William Edward Jackson, Erika Rae Worlledge and Morgan Elizabeth Worlledge; great-grandchildren, Rilea Ann Jackson and Jackson Taylor Robbins; sisters, Henrietta Wilburn of Toledo, Ohio, and Norma Savage and Jackie Bowles, both of Lake Panasoski, Fla.; aunts, Virginia Williams and Myrtle Smith, both of Oak Hill; special cousins, Ethyl Williams and Richie, Heather and Kia Williams; and many other family and friends too numerous to mention.
Memorial service was Jan. 13 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor David Sneed officiating. Burial will be at a later date at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
The family has requested donations be made to the Oak Hill Baptist Church General Fund, 613 Londale Drive, Oak Hill, WV 25901.
