Virgie Arthur
Virgie Mae Arthur, 92, of Cannelton, died Jan. 16, 2008, at Montgomery General Elderly Care Center, Montgomery.
Born Aug. 3, 1915, at Gallagher, she was the daughter of the late John and Ada Ferrell Aldridge. Virgie also was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Arthur; sons, Larry Wayne Arthur and Richard Allen Arthur; step-dad, Robert Oliver; brothers, Louis, Ira and Robert Aldridge, and Johnny Oliver; and sister, Rosalea Kessler.
She was the mother of seven sons and a devoted homemaker who spent her life nurturing her family. She was a member of Carbondale Baptist Church and Sunday school.
Surviving: her sons, William and wife, Patricia, of Falls View, Ben and wife, Janice, of Cannelton, Patrick and wife, Sharon, of Falls View, Terry and wife, Archie, of Boomer, and James of Good Hope; sisters, Lena Haskett of Cannelton, Lucille Brown and husband, Bob, of Waukesha, Wis., Glendola Cox of Belle, and Edith Hudson of Loudendale; brother, Enos Oliver and wife, Jenny, of Cottageville; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
Service was Jan. 19 at Carbondale Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Eagle and Rev. Fred Christian officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

Betty Ann Taylor Lykins Bolt
Betty Ann Taylor Lykins Bolt, 69, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 21, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born Feb. 12, 1938, at Cunard, she was the daughter of the late Henry Harrison Taylor and Virgie Mae Kelly Taylor Smith. Her husband, James Franklin Bolt, preceded her in death on May 12, 1994. She also was preceded in death by a son, Luther Lykins; a daughter, Carline Jean Lykins; grandson, Patrick Fannin; sisters, Lorraine Dick and Margaret Vance; and brothers, Jerry Taylor, Kenneth Taylor, Harold Taylor and William Taylor.
She attended Apostolic Holiness Church in Oak Hill. Betty liked gospel music and to bake.
Surviving: daughters, Sue Anne Kees Hudson and husband, Henry, of Minden, Brenda Jarrell of Oak Hill, Karen Fannin of Oak Hill, and Lisa Scanlan and husband, John, of Chicago, Ill.; a son, Larry Wayne Taylor; a sister, Jane Flint and husband, Butch, of Sophia; a brother, Bubbie Smith and wife, Lucy, of Oak Hill; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Carlos Lewis and the Rev. Charles Pittman officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop Cemetery.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the funeral home.

Dorothy Ethel Braenovich
Dorothy Ethel Braenovich, 75, of South Charleston, formerly of Kincaid, died Jan. 15, 2008, at Tender Heart Home Care in South Charleston.
Born Aug.14, 1932, at Culloden, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Carrie Foster Turley. Her husband, Drogan Braenovich, also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Braenovich attended the Kincaid United Methodist Church and was a member of the Oak Hill Chapter No. 107 O.E.S.
Before becoming a clerk and Postmistress for the U.S. Postal Service at Kincaid, Dorothy worked for H&R Block in Oak Hill.
Surviving: sons, Lee Braenovich and wife, Nancy, of Charleston, Jon Braenovich and wife, Shelia, of Oak Hill, Don Braenovich and wife, Evette, of Haymarket, Va., and Jeff Braenovich and wife, Lori, of Charleston; brothers, Bob Turley of Huntington, Dewey Turley of Atlanta, Ga., Gary Turley of Madison and Curtis Turley of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Wanda Woodrum Davis-Worth of Huntington, Loretta Williams of Ona, Betty Steed of Parkersburg, Louise Turley of Huntington and Barbara Effingham of Huntington; and grandchildren, Kelly Braenovich of Morgantown, Patrick Braenovich of Charleston, Ty Braenovich and Ali Braenovich, both of Oak Hill, and Mallory Braenovich of Charleston.
Services were Jan. 18 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Lucy Gray Short Craddock
Lucy Gray Short Craddock, 91, of Minden, died Jan. 21, 2008, at Ansted Center in Ansted.
Born Oct. 10, 1916, at Sinks Grove, she was the daughter of the late Marion Thomas and Louise Mutter Short. Her first husband, George Compton; second husband, Ernest C. Craddock; one son, Bobby Short; and eight brothers and sisters also preceded her in death. Lucy was the last living member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Craddock was a homemaker.
Surviving: a son, Roger Compton and his wife, Judy, of Spartanburg, S.C., and a special friend, Dixie Kincaid, to whom she was like a mother, also of Minden.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Mary Josephine Cuddy
Mary Josephine “Josie” Cuddy, 85, of Fayetteville, died Jan. 15, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a short illness.
Born Aug. 4, 1922, at Dempsey, she was the daughter of the late John Wayman Feazell and Thelma Okley Baughan Feazell. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Cuddy, in 1970; a sister, Virginia Adkins; and brothers, John Wayman Feazell Jr. and Ralph Feazell.
Mrs. Cuddy attended First Church of God, Fayetteville. She worked as secretary for Fayette County Justices of Peace Bob Godsey and Virgil Lyons, and for the Fayette County Commission as a switchboard operator.
Surviving: her son, William Michael Cuddy and wife, Stephanie, of Hurricane; a sister, Dorothy Roberts of Fayetteville; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral service was Jan. 17 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Inez Elvira Jackson Evans
Inez Elvira Jackson Evans, 80, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 17, 2008, at her home following a short illness.
Born Dec. 22, 1927, at Slab Fork, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Walter Jackson and Elvira Lucy Brown Jackson Herring. She also was preceded in death by her loving husband, Willie Webster Evans Sr., in February 1969; and sisters, Madeline Roach and Lorraine Billie Riggins.
Mrs. Evans was a devoted mother and homemaker, and served faithfully as church mother of Glorious Church of God in Christ in Oak Hill.
Surviving: daughters, Marie E. Evans Weatherby (Tim), Linda E. Evans, and Sandra L. Evans, all of Oak Hill, Cherita A. Evans McKibben (Carlos) of Albany, Ga., and Rosalind R. Evans Berry (Richard) of Beckley; a son, Willie Webster Evans Jr. and his wife, Annie, of Laurel, Md.; a brother, Carlton A. Jackson of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters, Annie Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ruth Harper (Leon) of Minden; nine grandchildren whom she adored, James, Candi, Shamaya, Vanetta, C.J., Brandon, Jade, Lindsay and Jessica; great-granddaughter, Raquel; special spiritual daughters, Ramona, Gladys and Yvonne Shepherd; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral service was Jan. 22 at Glorious Church of God in Christ, High Street, Oak Hill, with Bishop John Grant and Elder Perkins Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Hilltop Cemetery.

Ernest ‘Tom’ Raymond Foster
Ernest “Tom” Raymond Foster, 82, of Mount Hope, formerly of Minerva, Ohio, and Cunard, died Jan. 9, 2008, at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio.
Born Nov. 7, 1925, in Patrick Springs, Va., he was the son of the late Robert Sr. and Mary Ruth Cassel Foster of Wriston. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy Foster of Page, Claude Foster of Oak Hill, and Melvin Foster and Robert Foster Jr., both of Wriston; and a sister, Ollie Mae Lener of Bassett, Va.
Ernest worked as a truck driver at Artem Transportation and was a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church of Oak Hill.
Surviving: daughters, Velma (Dale) Riter of Canton, Ohio, Linda Abel of Carrollton, Brenda (Joe) McFadden of Minerva, and Marianna (Carl) Murphy of Canton; sons, Ray Foster of Wichita, Kan., Jim Foster of Madison, Fla., and Tom Foster of Tennessee; a sister, Margaret Bragg and her husband, Marco, of Whipple; brothers, Jesse Foster of Salem Road and Frank Foster of Oak Hill and his companion, Wandalene Wells of Mount Hope; 19 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was Jan. 15 at Bartley Funeral Home, Minerva, with Pastor Howard Sebrell officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Hills Burial Park, Canton.

Rev. Carl W. Gray Jr.
Rev. Carl W. Gray Jr., of East Bank, died Jan. 21, 2008, following a long illness.
Born Sept. 12, 1924, in Glasgow, he was the son of the late Carl W. Gray Sr. and Rone M. Harkless Gray. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Katheryn Marie Gray; his stepmother, Nolan Harkless Gray; and brothers, George D. Gray, Charles O. Gray, and Tommy D. Gray.
Rev. Gray married Katheryn Marie Gray June 11, 1951, in Belle.
He graduated from East Bank High School in May 1944. He continued his education at Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tenn., obtaining his A.B. degree in June of 1951 and his Bachelor of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary in May 1954. He also completed his Master of Divinity in September 1971. He also attended classes at Rutgers University.
He was first licensed as a minister in September of 1947 for West Virginia.
He was ordained as a minister in the Church of the Nazarene on July 9, 1955.
He served as pastor organizing Kansas City Trinity in Kansas City, Mo., from June 1953 to May of 1954. He pastored at Cross Lanes, from August 1954 through October 1958. He went on to pastor a Wheeling First Church of the Nazarene in Wheeling, from October 1958 until October 1960. He served as pastor at Beckley First Church of the Nazarene from October 1960 through October 1968.
He served as an employee for the State of West Virginia as hospital chaplain at Pinecrest Sanitarium.
Rev. Gray continued his ministry, serving as associate pastor at Oak Hill Nazarene Church from July 1970 until April 1989. He also served as associate pastor at Beckley Church of the Nazarene. He served as chaplain at the VA hospital in Beckley for 12 years. He lovingly ministered to the veterans and their families throughout his chaplaincy there.
Surviving: his son, Michael, and his wife, Karen Gray, residing in Belle.
The service for the celebration of his life will be held at Pryor Funeral Home in East Bank. Friends and family may call on Thursday, Jan. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. The service will be held Friday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Mervin Smith and Rev. Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Belva Lively Hendrickson
Belva Lively Hendrickson, 93, of Mount Hope, died Jan. 21, 2008, at her home.
Born Dec. 29, 1914, at Lively, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Bessie Toney Lively. Also, her husband, Cecil Randolph Hendrickson, preceded her in death on May 4, 2006.
Mrs. Hendrickson was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill.
After teaching elementary school for 45 years, she retired from the Fayette County Board of Education.
Surviving: son, John Hendrickson and his wife, Donna, of Oak Hill; and a grandson, Wesley Hendrickson, also of Oak Hill.
Graveside rites and committal service will be on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 3:15 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Hope, in Beckley, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, on Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m.

Ruby May Heslep
Ruby May Heslep, 86, of Hico, died Jan. 14, 2008, in Oak Hill.
Born April 22, 1921, at Secoma, she was the daughter of the late Woody S. and Ivree E. McPherson Caldwell. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Julius V. Heslep, on Oct. 31, 1987, and a brother, Porter Caldwell.
Mrs. Heslep was a member of Lookout Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving: daughters, Judy Battani of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Marla Carte of Hico; a son, Larry Heslep of Milledgeville, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Service was Jan. 18 at Lookout Baptist Church with Pastor David Bennett officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Dollie Mae Saunders Kania, 84, of Fayetteville, formerly of Oak Hill, died Jan. 20, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born Jan. 19, 1924, at Derry Hale, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Loretta Fields Saunders. Her husband, Bernard Joe “Bernie” Kania Sr., on Aug. 16, 1967, also preceded her in death. Dollie was the last survivor of her immediate family.
Mrs. Kania was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Oak Hill and a homemaker.
Surviving: son, Bernie Kania Jr. of Fayetteville; daughters, Brenda Bredeck and husband, Gene, of Dearfield Beach, Fla., Barbara Morris and husband, Tom, of Winchester, Va., and Sheila Mechling and husband, Russ, of Uniontown, Pa.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 23 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Carl Junior Marcum
Carl Junior Marcum, 82, of Mahan, died Jan. 17, 2008.
Born March 13, 1925, in Hitchins, Ky., he was the son of the late Howard and Essie Marcum.
Mr. Marcum was retired from Imperial Colliery Coal Company and he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Oak Hill and a member of Scottish Rite Bodies and the Beni Kedem Shrine.
Surviving: wife, Doris Salters Marcum; sons, Carl Marcum and Gary Marcum of Advance, N.C.; daughter, Debbie Melvin of Dunbar; sister, Charlotte Vandall of Mahan; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Service was Jan. 21 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Ernest White officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

Edward Ellis O’Dell
Edward Ellis O’Dell, 80, of Meadow Bridge, died Jan. 20, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.
Born May 3, 1927, at Hominy Falls, he was the son of the late Vaden and Bessie Pittsenbarger O’Dell.
Mr. O’Dell worked at Meadow River Lumber Company for 25 years and also was a retired coal miner. He was of the Baptist faith and loved to fish.
Surviving: his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Merze Simms O’Dell; a daughter, Patricia Diane Adkins and husband, Roger, of Meadow Bridge; sisters, Eleanor Hamilton of Charleston and Orionoko Orndorff of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Crystal and Christy Adkins, both of Meadow Bridge; and two great-grandchildren.
There was a private family service on Jan. 23, conducted by Pastor Steve Martin. Burial followed in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, at Clintonville.

John Frederick Oxendale, 59, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 17, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Born Aug. 21, 1948, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late William “Fred” Frederick and Ruth Elizabeth Tyler Oxendale.
He was an independent truck driver.
John was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Oak Hill.
Surviving: his brother, Donald Oxendale of Oak Hill; cousin, Benny Ray Brookes of Columbus, Ohio; and his three pet dogs, Casey, Frisky and Midnight.

Wade Harding Payne
Wade Harding Payne, 86, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Mossy, died Dec. 31, 2007, in Fort Myers.
Born Nov. 24, 1921, at Mossy, he was the son of the late Samuel Reed and Minnie Burnside Payne. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Wegmet; two infant sons, Tommie and Hope; and his 10 brothers and sisters.
Mr. Payne was retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 26 years.
Surviving: his devoted wife, Dorotha V. Tichenor Payne; daughters, Priscilla Dale and Sherry Kingsley; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert C. Thomas Sr.
Robert C. Thomas Sr., 83, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 20, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.
Born Dec. 8, 1924, at Charleston, he was the son of the late William C. and Melinda Jackson Thomas. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Lovey Florence “Polly” Thomas; a son, Danny Preston Thomas; and a brother, Eugene Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was retired as a lead machinist for the C&O Railway for 23 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having attained the rank of Seaman 1st Class, and served on the U.S.S. Montpelier.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill. Mr. Thomas enjoyed hunting and working in his shop.
Surviving: sons, Robert C. Thomas Jr. and wife Debbie, Jimmy D.
