David M. ‘Butch’ Brown



David Michael “Butch” Brown, 64, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 30, 2008, at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oak Hill, following a long illness.

Born June 24, 1943, at Lookout, he was the son of the late Clarence J. and Dorothy Mae Combs Brown.

Mr. Brown had worked as a crane operator at Union Carbide, Alloy.

David came to understand God’s purpose of a paradise earth with the aid of friends of The Kingdom Hall. He loved ham radios, was a licensed operator, and he loved animals.

Surviving: a brother, Clark Alan Brown and companion, Faye, of Hico; a sister, Karen Paul and husband, Wallace, of Mount Lookout; and a niece, Shea Paul of Duluth, Ga.

Service was Feb. 3 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with speaker Thomas McClung officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Ansted.

Leigh Ann Casteel Culmer



Leigh Ann Casteel Culmer, 40, of Paint Creek Road, Route 1, Scarbro, died Jan. 31, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Sept. 24, 1967, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of Linda D. Keel Casteel of Orlando, Fla., and the late James Casteel.

Mrs. Culmer attended Long Branch United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.

Surviving, in addition to her mother: her husband, Samuel Culmer; daughter, Brittany Culmer at home; a brother, Travis Casteel of Orlando; sisters, Carla Farr and husband, Mark, of Orlando, Jeri Casteel of Orlando, Debra Ellison and husband, Shaun, of Paint Creek, and Christina Casteel of Orlando; her maternal grandmother, Novella Keel of Paint Creek; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Service was Feb. 4 at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Chalmer Abrams officiating. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Helen Cleo Dickenson



Helen Cleo Dickenson, 82, of Hilltop, died Jan. 29, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill following a long illness.

Born June 21, 1925, at Collinsdale, she was the daughter of the late Arthur J. and Velva Mae Stone Vealey. Helen also was preceded in death by her husband, Bazzell, and her daughter, Donna Sue Dickenson.

Surviving: daughters, Maola Dickenson of Fayetteville, Mary Enos and her belated husband, Larry, of Des Moines, Iowa, Terra DeLora and husband, Richard, of Cornelius, Ore., Linda Buckland and husband, Tommy, of Fayetteville, and Marcy Goulart and husband, Gary, of Sutherland, Ore.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Velma Gayton of Chesapeake and Eva Cline of Rand.

Service was Feb. 1 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Delbert Walker and Jim Davis officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Ernest William Hylton



Ernest William Hylton, 78, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Stanaford, died Jan. 27, 2008, at Lakewood Hospital in Lakewood, Ohio, following a short illness.

Born in Fayette County on July 27, 1929, he was the son of the late Harley and Ethel Redden Hylton. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Paynter Hylton; and brothers, Jack and Bob Hylton.

Mr. Hylton was a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He also worked at Prince for the Corps of Engineers in building bridges.

Mr. Hylton was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and go camping. He had made his home in Cleveland for 30 years.

Surviving: his sons, James Harley Hylton and wife, Gail, of Lakewood and Mark Allen Hylton and wife, Victoria, of Colorado; a daughter, Lisa Carol Hylton Dwire of Beckley; grandchildren, James Allen, Marielle, Monika, Logan, Brittney, Lorisa, Jamie, Jennifer and Chris; five great-grandchildren; stepsons, Daron Paynter, Randy Paynter and Jim Paynter; a stepdaughter, Debra Paynter; a sister, Patty Hylton Koontz of Baltimore, Md.; and other family members, Laura Rummel and Renee Rummel.

Service was Feb. 2 at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Allan Copenhaver officiating. Burial followed in Grandview Cemetery.

Eloise Kincaid



Yvonne Eloise Ramsey Kincaid, 85, of Fayetteville, died Jan. 30, 2008, at Fayette Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Fayetteville, following an extended illness.

Born Dec. 30, 1922, at Ramsey, she was the daughter of the late Oscar R. and Lena Terry Ramsey. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Paris Kincaid, in 2005, and two brothers, Charles Ramsey and Emil Ramsey.

Mrs. Kincaid was a faithful member of Fayetteville Baptist Church where she was church treasurer for 28 years and a member of the choir, ladies circle, finance board and food committee.

She was a graduate of Ansted High School, a homemaker, and she had worked at Cook’s Department Store in Fayetteville.

Surviving: her son, Alvin Kincaid and wife, Thelma, of Fayetteville; a grandson, Philip D. Kincaid and wife, Carrie, of Hurricane; a granddaughter, Melissa D. Zickafoose and husband, Joe, of Salisbury, N.C.; great-grandsons, Reid Garrison Zickafoose and Riley Pierce Zickafoose, both of Salisbury; and sisters, Mabel Parrish of Bremen, Ohio, Anna Pinnick of Fayetteville and Lillie Schofield of Paradise, Calif.

Funeral service was Feb. 3 at Fayetteville Baptist Church with Pastor Ron George Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Opal Mae Perry Lively



Opal Mae Perry Lively, 94, of Oak Hill, died Feb. 2, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Sept. 8, 1913, at Cunard, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Dottie Martin Perry. She also was preceded in death her husband, Donald “D.P.” Lively; and sisters, Stella Knowles and Clara L. Mann.

Mrs. Lively was a homemaker and floral artist. She was a faithful member of the Rebecca Bible Class of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lively gave 65 years of service to the United Methodist Women serving several terms as president. She was a loyal and loving chairman of the Worship Committee of the church.

She was a past President of the Redbud and Oak Hill Garden clubs, and was a life member of the West Virginia Garden Club. She was President of the Fayette County Garden Council in 1967-69 and past Director of the Appalachian District Garden Council in 1985-86.

During the 1960s, Mrs. Lively opened Mount Hope Floral next door to Blackburn-Patterson Realty Co., where her husband, D.P., worked for more than 40 years. Her floral designs won blue ribbons and her love for the Redbud and Oak Hill Garden clubs will always be remembered through the “Opal Perry Lively Designers Creativity Award” presented by the Oak Hill Garden Council.

An avid crochet enthusiast, she has hand-stitched many beautiful, cozy quilts, and her paintings done in oils and pastels can be viewed from the Fayette County Courthouse to the streets of Oak Hill, The Lewis House, and beyond. Mrs. Lively was a member of the Fayette Art League.

Mrs. Lively also was a graduate of the Fayetteville High School.

Surviving: daughters, Elizabeth Baker and husband, William, of Daniels, and Nancy Lee Payne and husband, Jim, of Belmont, N.C.; a granddaughter, Kelly Peterson and husband, Edward, of Rocky Mount, Va.; a great-grandson, Tyler Benjamin Peterson; a sister, Edith Wickline of Tyler, Texas; a brother-in-law, Leslie Lively of Shady Spring; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for friends and family was held at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church on Feb. 5, with Dr. John Sauvage, Rev. William Slates, and Rev. Ellen File officiating. Burial was in High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Homer Newhouse



Homer William Newhouse, 60, of Fayetteville, died Jan. 30, 2008.

Born March 21, 1947, in Fayette County, he was the son of the late James Grant Newhouse and Mary Olive Davis Newhouse.

Mr. Newhouse worked for Rader Line Company as a dozer operator for 20 years.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and he loved animals.

Surviving: his sons, Mike Newhouse and wife, Heather, of Oak Hill, and Grant Newhouse and wife, Lori, of Crab Orchard; brothers, Clarence Newhouse and Vondie Newhouse, both of Oak Hill, Lawrence Newhouse and wife, Ruth, of Ballard, Delbert Newhouse and wife, Kathy, of Strongville, Ohio, and Douglas Newhouse and wife, Maxine, of Oak Hill; sisters, Naomi Fulkerson and husband, Jim, of Thompson, Ohio, and Deanna Richmond and husband, Leonard, of Fayetteville; and one granddaughter, Michaela Newhouse.

Services were Feb. 5 at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial followed in the Payne Cemetery, Kincaid.

Clara E. Pugh



Clara E. Pugh, 76, of Glen Daniel, formerly of Backus Mountain in Meadow Bridge, died Feb. 2, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 18, 1931, on Backus Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Orville James Sawyers and Molly Frances Pugh. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Walter Pugh Jr.; sisters, Wanda Burgess, Martha Sawyers, and Margaret Goins; a brother-in-law, Franklin Harmon; and brothers, James and Dallas Sawyers.

Mrs. Pugh was a homemaker and a member of the Millbrook Baptist Church of Crickmer.

Surviving: daughters, Carolyn Claypool and husband, Bill, and Kathy Bailey and special friend, Thomas Harrah, all of Backus Mountain; a son with whom she resided, Alan Pugh and wife, Rose, of Glen Daniel; sisters, Donna Orndorff and husband, Thornton, of Rainelle, and Berchie Felton and husband, Ervin, of Beckley; a brother, Gordon Sawyers and wife, Rita, of Elyria, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Venus Burgess and J.O. Goins; a granddaughter, Laura B. Claypool; stepgrandchildren, Melinda Hubbard and Bradley Goss; and many more nieces and nephews.

Services were Feb. 6 at the Wallace and Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with the Rev. Steve Martin officiating. Burial followed in the Harrah Cemetery on Backus Mountain.

Francis Jerome Roggan



Francis Jerome Roggan, 88, of Rt. 1, Scarbro, died Feb. 3, 2008, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1919, at Buffalo, N.Y.

Mr. Roggan was a retired Las Vegas casino employee, having worked for the Hacienda and Rendevous Racing Casino and Sports Books.

Surviving: his wife, Arvilla Jane Williams Roggan; stepson, Richard Williams of Cohocton, N.Y.; granddaughter, Alica Williams of Beckley; grandson, Richard Williams Jr. stationed at the Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, N.M.; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was Feb. 6 at First United Methodist Church in Beckley with Dr. Bob Stoddard officiating. His cremains will be interred at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity at a later date.

Frances Rose



Frances Rose, 62, of Ansted, died Jan. 31, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center following a long illness.

Born June 25, 1945, in Ansted, she was a daughter of the late Harmon and Goldie Collins Adkins.

Mrs. Rose was a homemaker.

Surviving: daughters, Norma Kinnard of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Ella Nichols of Gauley Bridge; sons, Ralph Johnson of Rustburg, Va., and Lonny Johnson of Ansted; a sister, Novella Johnson of Quinwood; brothers, Shirley Adkins of Ansted, Billy Joe Adkins of Fayetteville, Virgil Adkins of Fayetteville, and Jeff Adkins of Ansted; seven grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

Frances was cremated after visitation on Feb. 2 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted.

Harold ‘Hackey’ Dean Stump Sr.



Harold “Hackey” Dean Stump Sr., 74, of Page, died Feb. 4, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston.

Born Oct. 19, 1933, at Page, he was the son of the late Posey L. and Emma Hodge Stump. Seven brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.

He was a retired coal miner.

Mr. Stump was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of the United Miner Workers of America, District 29, a lifetime member of the VFW Post #8366 of Gauley Bridge and a lifetime member of the USS Cabot Naval Club.

Surviving: wife, Shirley T. Brown Stump; son, Harold D. Stump Jr. of Ingram Branch; daughters, Carla Y. Asbury and husband, James, of Kincaid, Anna Christine Stump of Page, and Kimberly Rose Stump of Ingram Branch; brothers, Kenneth James Stump of St. Petersburg, Fla., Posey L. Stump of Kincaid and Jackie L. Stump of Indiana; sisters, Margie Brown of Page, Iva Jean Shockey of Oak Hill and Delma Prather of Contentment Island, Va.; and by 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Gerald Grant officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, with military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110 of Oak Hill.

Wesley Hill Tincher Jr.



Wesley Hill Tincher Jr., 75, of Sewell Mountain, Rainelle, died Jan. 31, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea following a short illness.

Born April 25, 1932, at Rainelle, he was the son of the late Wesley Hill Sr. and Florence Gillespie Tincher. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, James Gillespie and Dennis Tincher, and a sister, Louise Crookshanks.

He was a self-employed contractor best known for his well drilling.

Mr. Tincher was a past master of the Midland Trail No. 166 Masonic Lodge and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving: his wife, Ina Christine Tincher; his son, James Steven and wife, Roberta, of Charleston; sisters, Cyrena Raichel of Los Alamitos, Calif., and Shanda Hiller of Brewster, Mass.; brothers, Kenneth and wife, Nancy, of Eatonton, Ga., and Richard Tincher and wife, Arlene, of Rainelle; a stepson, James Halsey and wife, Barbara, of Danese; grandsons, Jeremy and Steven and wife, Kimberly Tincher, all of Rainelle; great-grandchildren, Zach, Jordan and Mikayla Tincher; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Katilyn and Grant Halsey.

Service was Feb. 3 at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Dennis Estes officiating. Burial followed in Simms Cemetery, Loops Road.

William ‘Billy’ Lee Whaples



William “Billy” Lee Whaples, 31, of Oak Hill, died Dec. 20, 2007, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, following a long illness.

Born Nov. 16, 1976, at Key West, Fla., he was the son of Gary Whaples of Oak Hill and Denise Summers Whaples Mullins of Oak Hill.

Mr. Whaples was a coal miner for Appalachian Fuel at Pax.

Surviving, in addition to his parents: his wife, Jamie Perry Whaples; daughters, Mallorie Whaples and Mae Whaples, both of Oak Hill; and half-brothers, Paul Jeremie Buckner of Oak Hill and Cory Whaples of Oak Hill.

Services were Dec. 23 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Ralph Shupe officiating. Burial was at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

William Sherman Whitt



William Sherman Whitt, 59, of Route 1, Scarbro, died Feb. 1, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Born Feb. 29, 1948, at Milburn, he was the son of the late Tony and Jessie Weeks Whitt. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Whitt; and a sister, Anita Whitt.

Mr. Whitt was a retired coal miner, having retired from Imperial Colliery at Cabin Creek. He was a member of the UMWA.

Surviving: his wife, Betty Lou Bragg Whitt; a son, Billy Lee Whitt of Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, S.C.; daughters, Rebecca Whitt and Christine Whitt of Lagrange, Ohio, and Crystal Whitt of Scarbro; brothers, James Whitt of Alexandria, Va., and Lewis Whitt of Tennessee; and four grandchildren.

Service was Feb. 5 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill. Entombment followed at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.
