Eugene R. ‘Gene’ Campbell
Eugene R. “Gene” Campbell, 87, of Ansted, died March 3, 2008, following a long illness.
Born April 23, 1920, at Edmond, he was the seventh son of the late Wade and Myrtle Smales Campbell. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda Taylor Campbell; sister, Ruby Criss; and brothers, Clyde, Harry, Cecil, George, Dudley and Frank Campbell. Gene was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Gene was married to his first wife, Wanda Taylor Campbell. for 50 years. They had two sons, John and Ralph. He was married to his second wife, Alice Smith Campbell, for almost 11 years.
He was a 46-year member of Ansted Baptist Church. A Baptist minister for 22 years, he pastored several churches, established and built a church in Ohio.
Mr. Campbell was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Army, serving time in North Africa, Italy, England and Scotland. He served on the Democratic Executive Committee for eight years, was a 10-year owner and operators of Tri County Paving, worked about 19 years at Alloy and Semet-Solvay, was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Hayden Lodge No. 113 AF and AM of Ansted.
Surviving: his wife, Alice; sons, John Campbell Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Victor, and Ralph Campbell and his friend, Lynn Mossor, of Irondale, Ohio; grandchildren, Heather Campbell, Joni Campbell, Shawn Campbell and Christopher Campbell; a daughter-in-law, Libby Campbell of Ansted; half-sisters, Pansey Snodderly of St. Augustine, Fla., and Annie Clark of Kanawha Falls; half-brother, Riley Junior Propps of Florence, S.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6 at Ansted Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren Gilpin officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor. Military rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110. Masonic rites will be conducted by the Hayden Lodge No. 113 AF and AM of Ansted.

James Edward Donell
James Edward Donell, 76, of Pax, died Feb. 29, 2008, at his residence.
Born Feb. 21, 1932, he was the son of the late Clarence and Flossie Donell. He also was preceded in death by brothers, Bill, Bob and Joe; and sisters, Linda Foster, Maxine Leinbach and Jessie Deal.
Mr. Donell was a retired coal miner for the Willis Branch mine.
Surviving: brothers, Doug Donell and wife, Sharon, of Pax, Roy Donell and wife, Sue, of Lester, and Johnny Donell of Louisiana; sisters, Susan Lafferty and husband, Jim, of Stanaford, and Naomi Lively of Beckley; and a host of friends and relatives.
Funeral service was March 3 at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating.

Betty Jo Henson Goddard
Betty Jo Henson Goddard, 74, of Roseville, Mich., died March 2, 2008.
Born May 19, 1933, at Fayetteville, she was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin L. Henson in 1977 and Louise Martin Lattanzi in 1992.
Surviving: her husband, Harold Goddard; sons, Ernie, John, Kenneth and Randy; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brothers, Edward “Hink” Henson of Lake Helen, Fla., and Frank Henson of Fayetteville.
Services were March 5 at Buehlers Funeral Home, Roseville. Burial followed at Clinton Grove Memorial Park, Clinton Township, Mich.

Charles W. Hardy
Charles W. Hardy, 80, of Oak Hill, formerly of Mount Hope, died March 2, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, following a short illness.
Born May 5, 1927, at Willis Branch, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Lovelle Davis Hardy. A sister, Mary Douglas, and the mother of his children, Jean Hardy Seletyn, also preceded him in death.
Charles was a 1946 graduate of Pax High School where he was honored as best second baseman. He graduated from Beckley College in 1953 with a degree in Business Administration.
He was a veteran and former employee of the New River Coal Company at Garden Ground. Mr. Hardy retired after 30 years’ employment as a Merchant Marine for the Interlake Steamship Company.
He was of the Christian faith and a former member of the Mount Hope Lions Club.
Surviving: daughters, Linda Pugh and husband, Sammy, of Oak Hill, Dianne Barrett of Hilltop, Chris Gray and husband, Gary, of Oak Hill, and Jackie Mollohan and husband, J.D., of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Scott Pugh and wife, Christal, of Red Star, Samantha Bolen and husband, Scott, of Mount Hope, Hardy Barrett of Morgantown, Leslie Barrett of Morgantown, Shawn Gray and wife, Heidi, of Oak Hill, Jeff Gray and wife, Stephanie, of Oak Hill, John David Mollohan and wife, Theresa, of Charlotte, N.C.; “special” grandchildren, Creta Ann Seletyn of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Shawna Wolfe of Oak Hill; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Pugh and Haylee Pugh of Red Star, John Hardy Barrett of Morgantown and Riley Gray of Oak Hill.
There was no visitation. Rev. Harmon Davis conducted a private service for the family. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Roger N. ‘Tweety’ Long
Roger N. “Tweety” Long, 62, of Jupiter, Fla., died Feb. 26, 2008.
Roger was raised in Oak Hill and had been a resident of Jupiter for the last 20 years. He worked as a fleet manager for Palm Beach Grading Inc. in Lake Park, Fla. Roger was a patron at Ralph’s Stand Up Bar, and was known for his yellow Harley Davidson (Tweety).
He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved to restore vehicles, especially his CJ7 Jeep, which was built from the ground up with a Busch NASCAR Chevy engine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ebe Waugh.
Surviving: his loving wife of 30 years, Patricia; a brother, Fred Waugh (Vickie); sister, Cosette Ingram, and beloved dogs, Nick-Nick and Face; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service was March 1 at Aycock Funeral Home, Jupiter.

Caleb Nathanael Mullins, son of Marvin R. and Juanita Lilly Mullins of Layland, was stillborn Feb. 22, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Bill and Brenda Lilly of Layland; paternal grandparents, Eileen and George Kermit Mullins of Ansted; maternal great-grandmother, Nona Kincaid of Crickmer; aunts, Shiela Davis, Lisa Crookshanks, April Rozell, Suesann Baharloo and Rebecca Walkup; uncles, William Lilly Jr., Curtis Mullins and Charles Mullins; and several special cousins.

Douglas Earl Myers
Douglas Earl Myers, 45, of Kincaid, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, died Feb. 28, 2008, at his home, following a sudden illness.
Born Feb. 26, 1963, at Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Mrs. Mary Smith Myers of Kincaid, and the late John Myers Jr. Other than his father, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Payne.
Mr. Myers was a disabled short order cook. He attended the Free Will Baptist Church at Robson.

Jesse Smith
Jesse Smith, 96, of Oak Hill, died March 2, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born July 29, 1911, at Abraham, he was the son of the late Thomas Lewis and Mary Richmond Smith. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Hagee Smith; brothers, Bubbie Smith, Charlie Smith, Orval Smith and German Smith; a sister, Annie Smith; and a half-brother, Clifford Fox.
Jesse was a trackman for the C&O Railroad, having retired with 47 years’ service. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving: daughters, Belinda J. Sharp of Oak Hill, and Linda Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Richard Smith of Stanley, N.C.; and by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside rites and committal services were March 5 at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Oak Hill with Rev. Bill Messer officiating. Burial followed.

Karen Marie Treadway
Karen Marie Treadway, 46, of Oak Hill, died March 1, 2008, at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Born Sept. 20, 1961, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late William Canaday and Phylis Edwards Canaday. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Shirley Rainey.
Karen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a very outgoing person, friendly, cheerful, and just a remarkable lady, having never met a stranger, always smiling, and eager to show her kindness with a hug. Karen touched many lives with her witnessing for the Lord.
She was a member of the Life Bridge Assembly of God in Oak Hill, where she was a Sunday school teacher and on the Praise and Worship Team.
Karen was an employee of the Wal-Mart Department Store in Oak Hill and Fayetteville for over 18 years. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, having helped in many fundraisers.
Surviving: her husband, Jim Treadway of Oak Hill; her daughter, Erica Stewart and husband, Dave, of Oak Hill; her grandson and little man, Kaden Stewart of Oak Hill; brothers, Charles Canaday and wife, Debbie, of Prudence, Karry Canaday and wife, Lisa, of Prudence, and David Canaday and wife, Tammy, of Prudence; sisters, Linda Sue Griffith of Prudence and Brenda Lee Miller and husband, Eddie, of Scarbro; special brothers-in-law, Elijah Treadway and wife, Katherine, and their children, Elijah Jr. and Jonathan of Oak Hill, and Kenneth “Shortie” Treadway and wife, Linda, and their children, Denise and D.J. of Peytona; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and many, many friends.
Funeral service was March 5 at the Life Bridge Assembly of God, Oak Hill, with Pastor Joe Hoggard officiating. Interment was in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Michael Timothy White
Michael Timothy White, 33, of Plain City, Ohio, formerly of Danese, died Feb. 23, 2008.
Born Dec. 10, 1974, in Beckley, he was the son of Buddy and Larina (Rhodes) White of Danese.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Joshua White, in 1994.
Mr. White was a member of the Dagorhic, First Knight of Rivendell, co-founder and captain of unit Wargar.
He graduated summa cum laude in 2001 from Columbus State University and was currently employed with Sunbelt Rental, Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
Surviving, in addition to his parents: his loving wife, Elizabeth (Starrett) White, whom he married in 1999; a brother, Robert White of Richmond, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Katie and Dain Lawson of Rock Creek; nieces and nephew, Maggie and Tabby White, Kayla and Johnny Dain II; his mother and father-in-law, Kathryn and Jeffrey Salway of Hilliard, Ohio; brothers and sisters-in-law, James Starrett and Nicole Donahue of Hilliard, and William and Alanna Starrett of Hilliard; a sister and brother-in-law, Deborah Starrett and Donald Enders of Dublin, Ohio; nephew, Trenton Starrett; and many, many other loving family members and friends.
Funeral service was held March 1 at Ferguson Funeral Home, Plain City, with Pastor Blaine Keene officiating.

Audrey Nadine Whited Williams
Audrey Nadine Whited Williams, 86, of Hilltop, died Feb. 27, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born May 27, 1921, at Gay in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Clarence Dowel and Dollie Gay Fields Whited. Her husband, Klase Williams Jr., and brothers, Clarence Whited and Golden Whited, also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Williams taught elementary school and later reading in both Fayette and Putnam counties, retiring after 27 1/2 years.
She was a member of Hilltop United Methodist Church. Audrey enjoyed making quilts and giving them to her family and friends.
Surviving: daughters, Karen Piotrowski and husband, Steven, of Oak Hill, and Donna Thompson and husband, Frank, of Lynville, Tenn., and a brother, Clyde Whited of Huntington; grandchildren, Elizabeth Cooper of Mount Hope, Matthew Piotrowski of Craig, Colo., and Danny Thompson and wife, DeNeb, of Lynville; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Kaleb, Lillian and Morgan Cooper; and extended family members, Kenneth Lee Hubbard and wife, Tina, and their children, Audrey, Mrs. Williams’ namesake, and Isabella, all of Michigan, and Keith Hubbard and wife, Melinda, of Beckley.

Rev. James Richardson Wilson Sr.
Rev. James Richardson Wilson Sr., of Victor, died Feb. 27, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital, after a short illness.
He was born Jan. 31, 1937, on the Knobbs, near Union, Monroe County.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Josephine Wilson, on Oct. 6, 2004; and sisters and brothers, Ruth Webster of Toledo, Ohio, Hazel Abell of Akron, Ohio, Lacy Wilson of Union, Marshall Wilson of Newark, Del., and Robert Wilson of Greenville.
Jim grew up in Monroe County, joined the military in April 1951 and was honorably discharged in April 1954. He married Mary Josephine Caldwell on Feb. 15, 1956. He traveled to Chicago, Ill., to study auto repair.
In 1963, in Elkton, Md., he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. From 1964-68, he attended Tennessee Temple School in Chattanooga, Tenn. He pastored several churches in West Virginia, including Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, near Union; Baptist Bible Church, Hillsdale; Gum Spring Baptist Church, Chimney Corner; and Victory Independent Baptist Church, Victor.
Surviving: children, James R. Wilson Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Ansted, Myra G. Grose and husband, Jack, of Hico, Larry W. Wilson and wife, Diana, of Russellville, and Gary L. Wilson and wife, Susan, of Clifftop; sisters and brothers, Bessie Deiss of Pennsylvania, Nina Horn of Milton, Eva Sue Bouldin of Peterstown, Ruby June Woodruff of Lewisville, N.C., Frank D. Wilson of Union and Luther A. Wilson Jr. of Sinks Grove; grandchildren, Bethany Dawn Wilson of Berea College, Berea, Ky., and James R. Wilson III and Robert Anthony Wilson, both at home.
Funeral services were March 2 at Groves Funeral Home at Union, with burial at New Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon. The Revs. George Clarkson and Walter Deskins were in charge of the service.
