Harvey C. Ashley
Harvey C. Ashley, 86, of Hico, died March 2, 2008, at his home.
Born Jan. 8, 1922, at Corliss, he was the son of the late Lovell and Nova Sevy Ashley. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Ashley Bays, and a brother, Frank E. Ashley.
Harvey attended Kesler Memorial Presbyterian Church at Hico. He was a disabled coal miner.
Surviving: a sister, Anna A. Stewart and her husband, Richard, of Virginia Beach, Va.; brothers, John R. Ashley of Lady Lake, Fla., and J. Milton Ashley and his wife, Virginia, of Spotsylvania, Va.; and 16 nieces and nephews.
Service was March 7 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted, with Pastor James Dempsey and Pastor Stephen Fridenmaker officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

LuEtta Brown
LuEtta Brown, 74, of Danese, originally from Glen Fork, died March 9, 2008, in Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a short illness.
Born June 6, 1933, in Turkey Creek, she was the daughter of the late Walter Lawrence and Maudie Da-meron Browning. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Lee Brown Jr.; a son, Dwight “Ike” Brown; sisters, Lettie Gene Mullins, Irene Browning, Maymie Browning, Ruby Dean, and Mary Browning; a brother, Orville Browning; and a son-in-law, David England.
LuEtta was a homemaker, a member of Guyandotte Baptist Church, and she attended Glen Fork Baptist Temple. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and reading, but most of all spending time with her grandchildren and her family.
Surviving: sons, E.L. Brown and his wife Bonnie, Tommy Joe Brown and his wife, Angie, and Paul Brown and his friend, Myra, all of Glen Fork; daughters, Darlene England of Charlotte, N.C., and Geraldine Martin and her husband, Larry “Buck,” of Danese; a brother, Rev. Dennie Browning and his wife, Sylvia, of Jesse; a sister, Hattie Blevins and her husband, Edward, of Turkey Creek; 12 grandchildren, Kelly and husband Sam, Stephanie and husband Jeff, Isaiah, Rebecca, Matthew and fiancee Crystal, Nick and wife Molly, Chad, Brittany, Shelley, Larry Jr., Ashton, and Adam; seven great-grandchildren, Kyndall, Kayden, Nathan, Amiya, and David Matthew, and two on the way; several nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
A celebration of LuEtta’s life was March 11 at Glen Fork Baptist Temple, with Rev. Brian Dean officiating. LuEtta was laid to rest by her husband in Adkins Cemetery, Glen Fork.

Robert T. ‘Bob’ Coy
Robert T. “Bob” Coy, 78, of San Angelo, Texas, formerly of Lookout, died March 5, 2008.
Bob was born May 3, 1929, in West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Dorothy Crist, Martha O’Bryan and Margaret Worrell.
After school, he left to serve in the Air Force for four years. He was on his way back to West Virginia from California, and stopped in San Angelo to see his mother and sister, and it was his sister, Martha, who introduced him to Ro Gene Alley. They got married Sept. 4, 1954.
He went to work for the Texas Highway Department and retired from there after 35 years. He raced cars and especially loved NASCAR races. Bob also played the guitar and we loved to listen to him play and sing.
He loved hunting, fishing and going camping and was a life member of Good Times Sams Club. Bob and Ro Gene traveled to see many places with a tour group.
Bob was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He was a greeter at church and women loved his hugs. They would come to him if they had come in another door; if you knew Bob you knew his sparkling smile, handshake and those wonderful hugs. Bob loved his family.
Surviving: Ro Gene, wife of 54 years; a pair of queens and kings, Rhonda Copeland and her husband, Butch, of Angelton, Texas, Kathey Ashley and her husband, Gary, of Hawley, Texas, Mickey Coy of Houston and Ronny Coy of Corpus Christi, Texas; a sister, Mary Wright of Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Joe O’Bryan; a sister-in-law, Sarah Howell and her husband, Jim; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service was March 8 at Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel, San Angelo, with the Rev. James Wilkerson officiating. Interment followed in the Belvedere Cemetery, San Angelo.

Margie Joann Perdue Coleman Ellison
Margie Joann Perdue Coleman Ellison, 74, of Fayetteville, died March 4, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a brief illness.
Born Feb. 6, 1934, at Pineville, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Hobert Perdue and Parthena Kathryn Stewart. She also was preceded in death by her two husbands, Willie Ray Coleman and Jim Ellison, a sister and three brothers.
Mrs. Ellison was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving caregiver for private families for many years. Taking care of her family was her top priority, while in her spare time she enjoyed embroidering and cooking.
Surviving: her sons, Kenneth Earl Coleman and wife, Rose, of Chapmanville, and Jackie Ray Coleman and wife, Margaret, of Oak Hill; daughters, Patricia Coleman Rinehart of Oak Hill, Gladys Delaney of Oak Hill, and Carolyn Coleman Pascocciello of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Kenneth Earl Coleman Jr., Rusty Coleman, Ashley Nicole Strunk, C.J. Delaney Jr., Joel Brian Rinehart Jr., Gerald “Jerry” Rinehart, Justin Neil Tredway, Jessica Joann Coleman, Michael Vincent Pascocciello, Stephanie Sue-Rae’ Coleman and Shannon Rae Coleman; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was March 8 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Ron George Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Juanita Gore Fox
Juanita Gore Fox, 65, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Glen Jean, died March 1, 2008.
Service was March 7 at Schoedinger Funeral Home, Columbus.

Doris Tina Francesa
Doris Tina Francesa, 80, died peacefully on March 8, 2008, in the home of her sister, Elizabeth “Libby” Anderson, and her niece, Katharine, in Norcross, Ga., after a long illness, suffering for many years with spinal stenosis and emphysema.
Doris grew up in Fayetteville, where she graduated from Fayetteville High School. She played a clarinet in the high school marching band.
After graduation, she attended Ward Belmont Junior Women’s College, Nashville, Tenn. She then attended the two-year Wood’s Secretarial School in New York City. Enjoying her time in this city, she worked for a major oil company and the New York Giants. She was an avid theatergoer and loved exploring NYC.
After a number of years in New York, she attended University of Georgia, Athens, Ga., and finished her B.A. degree in English Literature.
After graduation from the University of Georgia, she returned to West Virginia to work with her father, John M. Francesa, in the family business, Acme Construction Company. Upon the death of her father, she became the president of Acme Construction. She also served as president of Raleigh PreCast in conjunction with longtime friend, Eddie Hess.
She was known for her kindness to stray animals, her love of Italian food, and her appreciation of flowers and nature.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, John M. Francesa and Nona Stephenson Francesa; and her brothers-in-law, Ted W. Anderson and Maurice King.
Surviving: her sister, Elizabeth (Mrs. Ted) Anderson of Norcross, Ga., and Elizabeth’s children, J. Michael Anderson and wife, Jennie McLean Anderson, of Bogotá, Colombia, Ted S. Anderson and wife, Connie Martin Anderson, of Fripp Island, S.C., Rob T. Anderson and wife, Rita Garcia Anderson, of Cumming, Ga., and Katharine E. Anderson of Norcross; six great-nephews and two great-nieces; and her other sister, Gloria (Mrs. Maurice) King of Oak Hill, and Gloria’s children, Carrie L. Carr of Fayetteville, and David F. King of Oak Hill.
Funeral services were March 12 in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Kelly Avenue, Oak Hill, with Father Roy Crist officiating. Burial followed in the Huse Memorial Cemetery, Fayetteville, where Doris was laid to rest with her father, mother and other family members.

Thomas S. Gwinn Sr.
Thomas S. Gwinn Sr., 66, of Hilltop, died March 5, 2008, at his home.
Born March 16, 1941, at Mullens, he was the son of the late Ray W. and Della Argentina Lockhart Morgan Gwinn. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Cherice Gwinn, of whom Tommy always said, “When I enter Heaven I’ll know exactly what happened to her.” Two brothers, Benny Morgan and William Gwinn, and a sister, Betsy Pack Gwinn, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Gwinn was a retired engineer for CSX Railway. He was a member of the Davis Camp, Glen Rogers, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving: a son, Thomas S. Gwinn Jr. and wife, Michelle, of Fayetteville; brothers, Johnny Gwinn of Front Royal, Va., Jack Gwinn and wife, Kathy, of Mount Hope, and Steve Gwinn of Huntington; sisters, Alice Cozart of Beckley, Patty Miller and husband, Gerald, of Harper Heights, and Mamie Swiger and husband, Steve, of Poway, Calif.; and grandchildren, Nash Gwinn and Reed Gwinn of Fayetteville.
Graveside rites and committal service were March 8 at Hilltop Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Sears officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted by VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill.

Tommie Louis Hamlet
Tommie Louis Hamlet, 66, of Glen Jean, died March 3, 2008, at the VA hospital following a two-year illness.
Born July 29, 1941, at Arista, he was a son of the late Annie Howard. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Faye Hamlet, and a son, Donnell Evans.
Mr. Hamlet was retired from the U.S. Army and was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church.
Surviving: sons, Tommie L. Hamlet Jr. of Mount Hope and Tommie Hamlet of Clinton, Md.; and 14 grandchildren.
Service was March 8 at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, Beckley, with Elder Delbert Coles and Pastor Earline Neal officiating.

Rev. Lewis James Higginbotham Sr.
The Rev. Lewis James Higginbotham Sr., 91, of Gatewood, formerly of Coal City, died March 5, 2008, and some time of declining health.
Born Nov. 24, 1916, at Layland, he was the son of the late Henry and Mae Mosses Higginbotham. He also was preceded in death by a son, Joseph; a daughter-in-law, Linda; brothers, Johnny, Clark, Lawrence, Jesse, Loren and Robert; sisters, Hilda, Wilda, Louise, Lorean and Hattie; and wife, Hazel.
He attended school on Beury Mountain and was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute. He was a retired Methodist minister, having retired last year from the Coal City charge. Also, he pastored churches at Crooked Run, Summerlee, Workman’s Creek, Backus Mountain, Fire Creek, Maplewood and Harvey Chapel, of which he was a member at the time of his death.
He was a member of UMWA Local Union 17, having worked in coal mines at Lochgelly, Summerlee and Beury Mountain. He had a radio program on WJLS for the last 25 years.
Surviving: sisters, Clara Harrah and Arbutus Bailes; children, Elizabeth, Lewis Jr., Charlotte and Thelma; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Knight; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was March 8 with Dr. Robert Stoddard officiating. Burial followed in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Rebecca Jean Langer
Rebecca Jean Langer, 39, of Fayetteville, N.C., formerly of Hico, died March 1, 2008, in Fayetteville.
Born Aug. 1, 1968, in Charleston, she was the daughter of Harold Ray Crist of Hico and the late Margaret Jo Dickerson Crist.
Rebecca was a nursing assistant.
Surviving, in addition to her father: her husband, David Langer.; sisters, Cathy Jo Miller of Clifftop and Jenny Farley of Charleston, S.C.; and a brother, Ronnie Crist of Harrisburg, Va.
Service was March 8 at Chapel of Rest, Victor, with the Rev. Maynard Kessler officiating. Entombment followed at Chapel of Rest Mausoleum.

George Robert Martin
George Robert Martin, 83, of Smithville, Tenn., died March 5, 2008, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg.
Born July 16, 1924, at Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Robert and Emma Fox Martin. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Martin, a sister, Ethel Bailes; and his wife, Betty, the mother of his children.
He grew up in and around Fayette County. Upon his 18th birthday, George joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was in the Naval Air Force as a radioman/gunner aboard a torpedo bomber in the South Pacific Theater of war.
After the war Mr. Martin returned home and began a career in construction, dealing in highway and home construction in the northeastern United States before owning a wall papering and home improvement business until his retirement in 1986.
Surviving: daughters, Donna Hamblin of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Carol Rock of Farnham, Va.; sons, Benjamin Robert Martin of Berryville, Va., and Christopher King Martin of Purcellville, Va.; sisters, Zella Tallant of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Laura Wood of Fayetteville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside rites and committal service were March 8 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with a eulogy by Eddie Persinger and military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill.

Merriem Essel Frisby McCormick
Merriem Essel Frisby McCormick, 81, of Oak Hill, died March 5, 2008, at her home.
Born July 27, 1926, at Page, she was the daughter of the late William and Rose Sublett Frisby. Being the last surviving member of her immediate family, a brother, Samuel Frisby, and four sisters, Reba Frisby, Willie Burgess, Helen Wise and Evelyn Elaine Burgess-Burton, also preceded her in death.
Mrs. McCormick retired from the Fayette County Clerk’s office after 30 years’ service. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Oak Hill.
Surviving: her husband of 61 years, Cecil McCormick; sons, Ronnie McCormick and wife, Patty, of Oak Hill, Sam McCormick and wife, Terri, of Oak Hill, and Leon McCormick and wife, Patty, of Glen Jean; a daughter, Cindi Carroll and husband, Harold, of Oak Hill; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Service was March 10 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Jerry Bush and the Rev. John Davis officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Carol F. Treadway Meadows
Carol F. Treadway Meadows, 69, of Brooklyn, died March 9, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following a long bout with cancer.
Born Dec. 3, 1938, at Robson, she was the daughter of the late Elijah and Mary Alice Pennington Treadway. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, William Edward Meadows, on Feb. 18, 2006; sisters, Gladys Rollins, Sharon Cottle and Garnet Withrow; and brothers, James Treadway and Roy Leslie Treadway.
Carol was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was a devoted listener of “Songs in the Night” with Rev. Jim Franklin.
Surviving: her daughters, Sandra Meadows and Cindy Meadows, both of Brooklyn; grandson, Clifford Edward Humphreys of Brooklyn; sisters, Betty Kincaid and Patricia Higginbotham; brother, Elijah Daniel Treadway; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fay-etteville, with Rev. Larry Humphreys officiating. Burial will follow in the Cunard Cemetery, Cunard.
The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral service at the funeral home on Friday.

Velma McClelland Morton
Velma McClelland Morton, 91, died at Riverside Community Hospital Riverside, Calif., on Dec. 31, 2007, following a short illness.
Born Feb. 18, 1916, in Red Ash, she was the daughter of the late Adonis B. and Addie (Hume) McClelland.
Velma graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1936 and from Charleston Beauty Academy in 1961. She was a longtime member of the Eastern Star Chapter 107 in Oak Hill.
She was married to Otis D. Morton and divorced in 1966, then moved to Florida where she resided until 1997. Her son moved her to Chula Vista, Calif., then to Tucson, Ariz., and then to Riverside, Calif., in 2004.
Surviving: a daughter, Lydalou M. George, living in Mascotte, Fla.; a son, O. Dexter Morton and wife, Delores K. Morton, living in Fontana, Calif.; grandchildren, Kristi Hirtzel of Clermont, Fla., Dr. Kelly R. Morton-Klein of Claremont, Calif., Greg R. Morton of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Debbie Campbell of Minneola, Fla., Margery Shellie White of Mascotte, Fla.; and great-grandchildren, Mallyree Hirtzel, Travis White, Marissa Campbell, Nicholas Campbell, Moriah White, Brandon S. Morton, and Noah M. Klein.
Inurnment will be at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill at a later date.

Pamela Lynne Riner
Pamela Lynne Riner, 48, of Oak Hill, died March 8, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Jerry Wayne (Palmer) Sherrod
Jerry Wayne (Palmer) Sherrod, 50, of Zanesville, Ohio, formerly of Mount Hope, died Feb. 28, 2008, at Select Speciality Hospital in Zanesville.
Born Jan. 7, 1958, in Mount Hope, he was the son of the late Albertha Mae Cole, who died in June 1991. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Joyce Woodson and Ada Palmer, and grandmother, Mary Ann Lewis. Jerry was reared by his aunt and uncle, the late Roy and Sylvia Sherrod.
Jerry was an exceptional sportsman, holding several records in football and weight lifting. He also excelled in boxing and wrestling. He was also an excellent bass guitar player.
Surviving: his soul mate of 16 years, Terri Thompson at home; sons, Jerry Sherrod Jr. of Zanesville and Sylvester Wayne Bailey; daughters, Shauna Sherrod of Columbus, Ohio, and Raquel Sherrod; several grandchildren; brothers, Larry Palmer (Teresa Ellis-Palmer) of the Philippines, Clarence Palmer of Michigan, Neil (Amy) Lewis of West Virginia and Jeff (Angela) Palmer of North Carolina; sisters, Phyllis Abram of Michigan, Vanessa Patterson of North Carolina, Debra (Timothy) Winbush of North Carolina, Mary Cook of North Carolina and Margaret (Steve) Raimey of North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Service was March 7 at New Hope Full Gospel Church, Zanesville. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, Zanesville.
