Lorna Aliff
Lorna Aliff, of Rt. 1, Scarbro, died March 16, 2008, at home, following a long illness.
Mrs. Aliff donated her body to the WVU Human Gift Registry in Morgantown. There will be no services or visitation.

Douglas C. Altizer Jr., formerly of Glen Jean, died at home in Deland, Fla., on Feb. 18, 2008.
Private memorial service was held in Deland.

Roy Lee Cales
Roy Lee Cales, 68, of Robson, died March 16, 2008, at his home.
Born June 29, 1939, at Deepwater, he was the son of the late Fred and Melissie Dean Cales. Several brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.
Roy was retired from Cargill Salt Mine in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a member of Union No. 436.
He was an outdoorsman.
Surviving: wife, Wilma Jean Manley Cales; son, Tony DeWayne Cales and wife, Christina, of Spencer, Ohio; daughters, Stephanie Cales Bragg and husband, Joseph, of Allenherst, Ga., and Teresa Cales Miguel and husband, Toney, of Delaware, Ohio; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brothers, Chester Cales of Hilliard, Ohio, Ronald Cales of Ravenna, Ohio, and Dewey Cales of Lancaster, Ohio, and a sister, Laura Gill of Welch.
Graveside rites and committal services will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow.

William Connie Cook
William Connie Cook, 76, of Mount Hope, died March 9, 2008, after a long illness.
Born Sept. 9, 1931, at Munition, he was the son of the late William Mansfield Cook and Lura L. Vealey Cook. He also was preceded in death by a brother, James Hubert Cook.
Mr. Cook was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Marsh Fork High School and West Virginia Institute of Technology where he received a B.S. degree in business education.
He was the former secretary of the Mount Hope Kiwanis Club and former treasurer of Cast Inc. of Beckley. He was a retired employee of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
Surviving: sisters, Mrs. Jean Gunnoe of Illinois, Mrs. Shirley Morrison and husband, Dempsey, of Ripley, and Mrs. Orpha Kostas and husband, John, of San Diego, Calif.; and several nephews and nieces.
Service was March 13 at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. David Cook officiating. Burial followed in Vealey Cemetery, Pine Knob.
Military graveside rites were conducted by VFW Post No. 4326 of Midway.

Edith Carroll Cousins
Edith Carroll Cousins died at her home in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7, 2008.
Born in Fayette County, she was the last surviving child of the late Abraham and Ellen Barnett Carroll.
As a young girl she moved to Columbus and lived with her sister, Jessie Carroll Daniel. Following her graduation from North High School, Edith continued her education at Ohio State University where she received three degrees, a Bachelor of Science in elementary education, a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in elementary education.
Edith accepted the Lord at an early age. Her early church memberships included First Baptist Church of Greentown and First Baptist Church of Mount Hope. Upon her return to Columbus in 1962, she rejoined Shiloh Baptist Church, the church of her youth, and remained a devoted member until declining health prevented her attendance.
A life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., she was a charter member of the Beckley Alumnae Chapter and an honorary charter member of the Columbus Alumnae Chapter. She was also a member of the National Council of Negro Women, the Urban League, the Urban League Guild and the NAACP.
Surviving: seven nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and nephews; 15 great-great-nieces and nephews; two great-great-great-nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Tommy Davis
Tommy Davis, 20, of Victor, died March 11, 2008, at Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington.
Born Dec. 19, 1987, in Dahlonega, Ga., he was the son of Raymond Jackson Davis of Huntington and Linda Kay Duncan Wilson of Victor.
He worked as a landscaper.
Surviving, in addition to his parents: his companion, Ashley Wilson of Victor; a son, Noah Donovan Davis at home; half-sisters, Chastity Keeney of Victor and Jessica Wilson of Oak Hill; half-brothers, Robert Keeney of Cummings, Ga., Brett Duncan of Victor and Gage Wilson of Victor; a loving niece, Alexis Williams of Victor; grandparents, Charles Duncan of Minden and Della Marie Duncan of Cummings; stepgrandparents, Alden and Sissy Taylor of Victor; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Service was March 15 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Ansted. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens of Victor.

Elizabeth Mae Hoge
Elizabeth Mae Hoge, 100, died March 8, 2008, at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital.
Born in McKeesport, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mike and Mary Henry. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Hoge; and her sisters, Mary Ossick and Anna Francow.
She was a graduate of Oak Hill High School; attended Capitol City Commercial College; and was a retired bookkeeper at Merrill Photo Supply Company of Charleston where she worked 34 years.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, Charleston, and a member of Broadmore’s Red Hat Club and Zievna Beneficial Society.
Surviving: nephew, William Francow (Mary) of Louisville, Ky.; niece, Ann Ossick of Beckley; devoted friend, Lana Miller of Hurricane; and many great-nephews and -nieces.
Her funeral mass was celebrated March 13 at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, Charleston.
Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Catherine Anne Lagos
Catherine Anne Lagos, 86, of Oak Hill, died March 15, 2008, at her home.
Born Nov. 17, 1921, in Harlan County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Novobilsky. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lagos; daughters, Catherine Anne Cosgrove and Betty Jean Lagos; and a brother, Mike Novobilsky.
Mrs. Lagos was a homemaker and a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill.
Surviving: sons, John E. Lagos (Mary Ann) of Manassas, Va., Robert R. Lagos (Paula) of Fayetteville, Frank D. Lagos of Oak Hill, James M. Lagos (Vickie) of Hilltop, and Dr. Gregory Lagos of Charleston; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial was March 18 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Nelson Eugene Light
Nelson Eugene Light, of Beckley, formerly of Daniels, died March 12, 2008, at Lucy Bowers Hospice House.
Born Dec. 9, 1927, near Oak Hill, he was the son of the late William Alfred and Madgelene Treadway Light. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Eva Conner and Louise Ryan; and brothers, Leonard, Willie and Glen Light.
Nelson was a member of Cross Point Church of God, formerly known as Beckley First Church of God. He graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1946. He served in the Korean Conflict, stationed in Japan.
Nelson worked in the retail business, having been a salesman at New River Supply Co., John W. Eye furniture store and Montgomery Ward, and was part owner of Maxwell Hill Furniture Co. for a period of time. He also worked for Charlie Earehart Dodge and Jeep, Beckley Toyota and retired from White Chrysler Dodge in Oak Hill.
Surviving: his wife, Geneva Dobbins Richmond Light; stepdaughter, Mary Grace Richmond of Bluefield; daughters, Zoe Matics of Charleston and Gay McGuffin and husband, Tim, of Oak Hill; granddaughters, Sarah and Hannah Matics of Charleston; grandsons, Darrin McGuffin and wife, Tega, and Derek McGuffin, all of Oak Hill; brother, Ira Light and wife, Nila, of Oak Hill; sister, Dorothy Hottle of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.; brother-in-law, Carlos “Jack” Dobbins and wife, Mary, of Beckley; sister-in-law, Betty Reed of Greystone Village of Beaver; several nieces and nephews; his church family; and a host of friends.
Service was March 15 at Cross Point Church of God, Beckley, with Pastor Vondie Cook and the Rev. Pete Lokant officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Linda B. Morrison
Linda B. Morrison, 52, of Fayetteville, died March 13, 2008, at home following an extended illness.
Born Oct. 18, 1955, at Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Lee Otis Bobbitt and Florence Helen Eakin Bobbitt.
Linda graduated from Nicholas County High School and Concord University, where she received a B.S. in Biology. She also received her master’s degree from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies.
She was the supervisor of the Nuclear Medicine Department at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, from November 1982 until June 2006.
Linda was a member of the Fayetteville United Methodist Church.
Surviving: her husband, John Morrison of Fayetteville; her children, Kelli Morrison of Huntington, and Steven Morrison and Mark Morrison, both of Fayetteville; sisters, Anne Strickler and husband, Bob, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Patricia Cox and husband, Carl “Kim” of Keslers Cross Lanes; stepmother, Edith Price-Bobbitt of Fayetteville; mother-in-law, Shirley Morrison of Philipsburg, Pa.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vicky and Al Stone of Philipsburg; sister-in-law, Karen Morrison of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 at the Fayetteville United Methodist Church, 120 High Street, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating. She will be laid to rest in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, following the service.

Evelyn Louise Nugen
Evelyn Louise Nugen, 74, of Fayetteville, died March 13, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following an extended illness.
Born April 18, 1933, at Marfrance, she was the daughter of the late Paskell and Icie Drennen James. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Nugen, and a brother, Kenneth James.
Mrs. Nugen was a retired custodian for Fayetteville First Church of God, where she served many years as a Sunday school teacher, helped with Bible School, was a choir member and a powerful prayer warrior.
Surviving: her husband, Bert Nugen; a son, Alan Nugen and wife, Kim, of Fayetteville; daughters, Diana Hogan and husband, Jim, of Fayetteville, Karen Hildebrand and husband, Terry, of Oak Hill, and Sandra Price and husband, Monty, of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Jimmy Hogan, Jonathan Hogan, Julia Mallard, Chris Hildebrand, Kevin Hildebrand, Logan Nugen, Laura Price and Nathan Price; great-grandchildren, Ryan Persinger, Erica Hogan, Jamie Hogan, Faith Mallard and Andrew Pigg; brothers, Orville James and wife, Anna, of Fayetteville, and Larry James and wife, Debbie, of Oak Hill; and a sister-in-law, Judy James of Oak Hill.

Melba E. Peck
Melba E. Peck of Wilmington, Del., formerly of Romont, died suddenly on March 13, 2008.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Raymond A. “Ray” Peck, in 2002.
Melba was a homemaker who loved animals, especially cats and dogs. She enjoyed country and standard music and gardening.
Surviving: her children, Cheryl Stevens of New Lexington, Ohio, Bernard Peck of Bruce, Wis., Sheridan Peck of Killeen, Texas, Glennis Peck of Ocean View, Del., and Teresa Laing and Gerald Peck, both of Wilmington, Del; sister, Ludena Steele of Ansted; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and her beloved pets, Goldie, Rocky and Tippie.

Stephen Francis ‘Steve’ Pleva
Stephen Francis “Steve” Pleva, 91, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Scarbro, died March 13, 2008.
He was born Aug. 26, 1916, in West Virginia.
He was the dear brother of Ted Pleva and wife Mary, Sophia Korntheuer (Ted, deceased), John Pleva and wife Julia, Casimir Pleva, Frank Pleva and the deceased Leon Pleva, Frances Bugin, Julia Bugin and Mary Nason, and was a beloved uncle.
Funeral service was March 17 at Tabone-Komorowski Funeral Home, followed by mass of Christian burial at St. John Cantius Church. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Billy Lee Reece Sr.
Billy Lee Reece Sr., 66, of Oak Hill, died March 10, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.
Born Aug. 24, 1941, at Plum Orchard, he was the son of the late William Reece and Lavella “Garnet” Wriston Vanover. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Reece; stepbrothers, Luther and Robert Aliff; a stepsister, Opal Faye Aliff; brother-in-law, Randal Lipscomb; and nephews, John Lipscomb, J.C. and Dallas Smith.
Mr. Reece was a retired outside foreman for West Virginia-American Water Co.
Surviving: his wife of 44 years, Brenda Kay Williams Reece; a daughter, Robin Leanne Sinkhorn of Oak Hill; a son, Billy “Rast” Lee Reece Jr. and wife, Robin Sue, of Hilltop; sisters, Betty Smith and husband, Carlos, of Oak Hill, and Nettie Lipscomb of Perrysville, Ohio; and grandchildren, Hunter Reece and Caitlin Reece.

Pamela Lynne Coleman Riner
Pamela Lynne Coleman Riner, 48, of Oak Hill, died March 8, 2008, unexpectedly at Plateau Medical Center after a sudden illness.
Born Aug. 7, 1959, at Oak Hill Hospital, she was the daughter of Naomi Deal Coleman of Mount Hope and the late Donald Eldridge Coleman Sr. of Elkins.
Pam was baptized at and was a member of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren in Fayetteville. She attended Fayetteville High School and was a graduate of Beckley Beauty Academy. She was formerly employed by Harvey’s Wig Villa and Salon. Pam worked for over 20 years at Raleigh General Hospital, in the business office and then in human resources. She was blessed with many creative talents and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Surviving, in addition to her mother: her fiance, Dale Keener of Oak Hill; her beloved sons, Joshua Feazell of Fayetteville, Jonathan Riner and wife, Kim, of Oak Hill, and Jahden Riner of Oak Hill, who lived at home with his mother; a stepdaughter, Mitzi Riner Crouse of Goldsboro, N.C.; her sister, Denise Coleman Riner and husband, Sam, of Fayetteville; her brother, Donnie Coleman and his fiancee, Corey Hatzenbuehler, of Oak Hill; a much-loved aunt, Mary Deal Forren of Mount Hope; niece, Ashlee Riner; nephews, Noah Riner and River Coleman; her cousins and many friends. Pam also was excitedly expecting her first grandchild this year.

William Arnold Saye
William Arnold Saye, 80, of Oak Hill, died March 11, 2008, at the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Va.
Born June 28, 1927, at Lick Fork, he was the son of the late William Arnold Saye Sr. and Hazel Dawson Saye.
He was a retired welder for Long-Airdox.
Surviving: his wife, Marceline Foster Saye; a daughter, Karen Saye Story and husband, Michael, of Prince George, Va.; sons, William Jay Saye and wife, Betty, of Disputanta, Va., Michael T. Saye of Oak Hill, and Danny J. Saye and wife, Kalley, of Dinwiddie, Va.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Service was March 15 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Jay Saye officiating and eulogy by John Hall. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Delphine Violet Shuck
Delphine Violet Shuck, 82, of Layland, died March 15, 2008.
Born July 24, 1925, at Backus Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Bessie Adkins. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Pershing Shuck; her daughter, Bonnie Harrah; daughters-in-law, Connie Shuck (wife of Ronald Shuck), Lola Shuck (wife of Pershing Junior Shuck); son-in-law, Raymond Cole (husband of Betty Cole); granddaughter, Tera Shuck; brothers, Erskin Adkins, Harold Adkins, Garland Adkins, Galvie Adkins, Wilsie Gill and Willard Gill; and a sister, Ermer Goins.
Delphine loved cooking and taking care of her family. She enjoyed family gatherings and listening to Christian music.
Surviving: her loving children, Betty Cole of South Carolina, Pershing Junior Shuck and companion, Patricia Martin, of Tennessee, Patricia Bone and companion, Raymond Duncan, of Oak Hill, Ronald Shuck of Maple Fork, Billy Shuck and wife, Sherry Shuck, of Tennessee, and Judith Farley and husband, Larry Farley, of Layland; brother, Wilbert Adkins of Piney View; sister, Joann Adkins of Piney View; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Services were March 19 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Floyd Bolen officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Myrtle Gay Hyslop Smith
Myrtle Gay Hyslop Smith, 91, of Oak Hill, died in Fairport, N.Y., on March 5, 2008, while visiting her son and his family.
Born Oct. 17, 1916, in Eccles, she was a first-generation American, the daughter of the late Alexander and Henrietta Hyslop, who emigrated to West Virginia from Scotland by way of Nova Scotia.
She also was preceded in death by her loving husband, Albert O’Dell “Abe” Smith; her son, John Smith; sisters, Ella Russell, Grace Maynus, Margaret Cunningham and Hazel Dean; and brothers, Samuel and Alexander Hyslop.
Myrtle resided in West Virginia until 1952, when she moved to Long Island, N.Y., and then in 1974 retired to Lynchburg, Va.
She was a member of Forest Road United Methodist Church for many years in Lynchburg. Upon the death of her husband, Myrtle moved to Oak Hill, where she was an active member of Oak Hill Methodist Church. She will be missed by many.
Surviving: her sister, Virginia Williams of Oak Hill; her son, Albert “Willie” Smith, four grandchildren and two great-grandsons, all of Fairport; and many loving nieces, nephews and close friends.
Funeral service was March 15 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill. Burial immediately followed in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Harold Eugene ‘Speedy’ Spade
Harold Eugene “Speedy” Spade, 69, of Rainelle, formerly of Patterson Mountain, Meadow Bridge, died March 8, 2008, at his home following a short illness.
Born June 3, 1938, at Gordon, he was the son of Dessell Patterson Puckett of Rainelle and the late Loomis Eugene Spade.
Mr. Spade was a millwright mechanic for Westvaco in Covington, Va., and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving, in addition to his mother: sons, Samuel Eugene Spade and Harold Eugene Spade II, both of California; a daughter, Judith Elise Fennell of Morgantown; the mother of his children, Cecelia A. Spade of Morgantown; sisters, Fern Carr and husband, Frank, of Meadow Bridge, and Jeroma Nothstine of Rainelle; two nieces; three great-nephews; a great-niece and a host of other family and friends.
Mr. Spade requested no funeral service.

William Dale ‘Bill’ Szuch
William Dale “Bill” Szuch, 53, of Salem, Va., formerly of Mount Hope, died suddenly March 14, 2008, while on a business trip in Chicoutimi, Quebec, Canada.
Born Feb. 12, 1955, at Mount Hope, he was a son of the late Luis F. and Anna Wilson Szuch.
He was an employee of Alcan Products and a former employee of ITT for 26 years.
Bill was a member of the West Salem Baptist Church, Salem, Va.; a 1973 graduate of Mount Hope High School; and graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology, Montgomery, and from West Virginia University, Morgantown.
Surviving: his wife, Debbie Pino Szuch; a daughter, Carissa D. Szuch; a son, Jeremy B. Szuch; sisters, Charlotte Peraldo, Patricia Merz, and Dreama George; a brother, Luis E. Szuch; his mother-in-law, Wanda June Pino; and a sister-in-law, Susan L. Pino.
A memorial service was held March 18 at West Salem Baptist Church, Salem, Va.
