Gary Fannon

Gary Fannon, 58, of Mount Hope, died March 29, 2008, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Beckley.

Born May 31, 1949, at Montgomery, he was the son of the late Melvin L. and Mary E. Pettit Fannon.

Gary was a disabled veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.

He attended the Maple Fork Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving: his companion of 29 years, Carolyn Adkins; son, Chris, at home; brothers, Raymond Fannon and wife, Charlotte, Gail Fannon and wife, Vicky, William Fannon and wife, Sharon, Jerry Fannon and wife, Sue, and Wayne Fannon and wife, Lisa; sisters, Phyllis Allen and husband, Bud, Mary Jane Hutchinson, and Kathy Johnston and husband, Jackie; special family members, Pamela Dillion, Debbie Bowyer, Charles Bowyer, Jenny Bowyer and John Mullins; a host of nieces and nephews and all of his beloved pets.

Services will be Thursday, April 3 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Robert Barley and Rev. Dorothy Osborne officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 3110, Oak Hill.

Charles ‘Dana’ Gill

Charles “Dana” Gill, 73, of Minneapolis, Minn., died March 18, 2008, in Minneapolis.

He was born Aug. 30, 1934, in Lookout, the son of the late Derick “Roy” and Edith (Davis) Gill. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Jane (Bradish) Gill; sister, Ellen (Gill) Peyton; and brother-in-law, Charles “Don” Peyton.

He graduated from Ansted High School in 1952 and Marshall University in Huntington.

Mr. Gill was a Korean War veteran, serving as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and a retired longtime employee of IBM.

Surviving: son, Dave (Sandi) Gill; brother, Roger (Rita) Gill; stepmother, Adlyn Gill; stepchildren, Terry (Cindy) Anderson, Sherri (Dan) McGuire, Randy Anderson, David Roe, Jeff Roe and Kelli (Jeremy) Philo; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Service was March 29 at Edinbrook Church, 4300 Edinbrook Parkway, Brooklyn Park, Minn.

Private interment was at Fort Snelling.

Memorials are preferred to Huntington’s Disease Research.

Frances Keller Greene

Frances Keller Greene, 93, of Hickory, N.C., formerly of Oak Hill, died March 25, 2008, at the Lutheran Home, Hickory.

She was born Dec. 6, 1914, in Hudson, N.C.

Mrs. Greene was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church, Redbud Garden Club and a past member of Fayette County Shrine Club-Eastern Star while living in Oak Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Greene of Oak Hill; a sister, Precious Keller Lail of Hickory; and brothers, Dewey Keller of Hudson, N.C., and Steele Keller of Granite Falls, N.C.

Surviving: nephew and niece, Charles Montie and Linda Lail; great-nieces and nephews, Paula and Shawn Dagenhardt, Chuck and Meg Lail of Hickory and Todd and Yalanda Lail of Taylorsville, N.C.; great-great-nephews, Lance Dagenhardt, Jacob, Grayson and Cole Lail, and Zacary Lail; and great-great-nieces, Lindsay and Leah Dagenhardt and Ashten Lail.

Funeral service was March 27 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. David Sneed officiating. Entombment followed in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Charles M. Grose

Charles M. Grose, 68, of Summersville, died March 24, 2008, at home, following a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of Nicholas County.

Born Aug. 7, 1939, at Enon, he was the son of the late James Kenneth Grose and Edith Grose. He also was preceded in death by his stepmother, Delphia Chapman Grose; and his stepbrother, Dale Chapman.

Charlie was a retired coal miner, having spent 43 years in the industry. He worked 40 of those years for Terry Eagle Coal Co., ending his career as safety director. He touched the lives of many miners in Nicholas and surrounding counties through his annual training and electrical certification classes.

Charlie’s hobbies included active membership and leadership roles in the Wadcutters Rifle and Pistol Club. He also enjoyed many years of dancing with Wilma and his friends as members of the Lakeside Square Dancers.

In his retirement years Charlie enjoyed working on the farm and in his garden. He could also be found always supporting his grandchildren in their many activities.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who lived a life of integrity and character. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Surviving: his lifelong love of 48 years, his wife Wilma Schoolcraft Grose; a daughter, Michelle Grose Klenk and her husband, Bill, of Fayetteville; a son, Joe Grose and his wife, Judy, of Summersville; a brother, James Eugene Chapman and wife, Donna, of Summersville; and his grandchildren, Rebecca and Sarah Klenk and Jacob and Jenna Grose, who were the joy of his life.

Service was March 27 at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville, with the Rev. William Johnson officiating. Burial followed in West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin.

William ‘Bill’ Lee McGraw

William “Bill” Lee McGraw, 52, of Rt. 1, Fayetteville, died March 29, 2008, at his home.

Born Aug. 24, 1955, in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Henry Paul and Noka Miller McGraw.

Mr. McGraw was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was an avid hunter.

Surviving: sons, Cork McGraw and wife, Amy, of Clear Creek, and David McGraw of Oak Hill; brothers, Paul Michael McGraw of Fayetteville, Richard McGraw of Wilmington, N.C., and Thomas Miller of Fayetteville; sister, Edith Seeley of Charlotte, N.C.; and grandchildren, Colten Taylor, Haley McGraw and Ashely McGraw.

Graveside rites and committal service will be on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville with military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110, Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home on Friday, April 4 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Daisy Lynn Nichols

Daisy Lynn Nichols, stillborn infant daughter of Arthur D. Nichols and Angel Dawn Carroll of Danese, became an angel March 29, 2008.

Service was April 1 at the Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana. Daisy was laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

June Marie Blackwell Pemberton

June Marie Blackwell Pemberton, 76, of Lochgelly, died March 25, 2008, at her home.

Born July 8, 1931, at Lochgelly, she was the daughter of the late Claude Nelson Blackwell and Grace Mae Grant-Blackwell. Her husband of 53 years, Floyd Pemberton Jr., also preceded her in death, as did three sisters, Nellie Gay Shyblosky, Kathleen Jones and Corine Blethen, and four brothers, Glen Blackwell, Woodrow Blackwell, Bob Blackwell and Fred Blackwell.

Mrs. Pemberton was a homemaker.

Surviving: her only daughter, Grace Marie Wittenberg and husband, Rev. Julius; grandsons, Thomas Andrew Mason Jr. and wife, Amie, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Clint Michael Mason and wife, Tonya, of Oak Hill; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Dylan Mason of Winston-Salem, and Mackenzie Kaye, Tiffanie and Jared Mason, all of Oak Hill; as well as numerous Blackwell and Pemberton family members and many friends.

Service was March 28 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. Entombment was at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Larry Keith Rice

Larry Keith Rice, 53, of Huntington, formerly of Beckley, died March 29, 2008, at his home.

Born May 15, 1954, at Beckley, he was the son of Wilma Minor Rice Evans of Oak Hill, and the late Albertis “Birt” Rice Jr. A brother, Ronald Rice, also preceded him in death.

He was a disabled mine belt repairman.

Larry served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era, having attained the rank of private.

Surviving, in addition to his mother: his wife, Beverly Kincaid Rice; daughter, Crystal Stanfield of Huntington; granddaughter, Ashley Stanfield of Huntington; five brothers and eight sisters and numerous other family and close friends.

Graveside services were April 2 at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Oak Hill with Pastor Paul Basham officiating and military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110 of Oak Hill.

Walter Lee Sturgill

Walter Lee Sturgill, 80, of Monterey, Tenn., formerly of Oak Hill, died March 27, 2008, at his home in Tennessee.

He was the son of the late Mark and Edyth Tucker Sturgill. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude, Cecil and Bill; and two sisters, Marie Jenkins and Margie Schrader.

Surviving: his wife, Jaunell Sturgill; sons, Walter Sturgill Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Bill Sturgill and wife, Jeannie, of Crab Orchard; a daughter, Angel Criss and her husband, Lee, of Mount Hope; grandchildren, Charles Renkivish of Oak Hill and Jeremy and wife, Andrea Criss, of Huntington; and sisters, Lillian Buckland of Midway and Carol Jenkins of Norton, Va.

Graveside rites were March 30 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Micheal Kessinger officiating.

Patricia Ann (Pat) Van Hook

Patricia Ann (Pat) Van Hook, 67, of Fayetteville, died March 24, 2008, at her home.

Born Dec. 6, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Alma Bartholomew.

Patricia was a retired health care worker. She loved hiking, horseback riding and gardening.

She attended the Evangel Fellowship at Beckwith.

Surviving: her husband, John L. Van Hook of Fayetteville; sons, David Van Hook and Daniel Van Hook, both of Fayetteville; daughter, Peggy Floyd of Macon, Ga.; and grandchildren, Louisa Van Hook, Johnathan Floyd, Christopher Floyd, Dakota Van Hook and Jordan Van Hook.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.



Louanna Gail Woodrum Vest

Louanna Gail Woodrum Vest, 57, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Oak Hill, died March 25, 2008, at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland.

Born July 15, 1950, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late James Lomer Woodrum Sr. and Addilue Evon Harding Woodrum Wagner and the stepdaughter of Cecil Wagner. A brother, James L. Woodrum Jr., also preceded her in death.

She was a 1969 graduate of Collins High School, Oak Hill.

Surviving: her beloved husband, Charles E. Vest; sons, Charles E. Vest Jr. and wife, Terrie, and Michael Vest and wife, Vickie; four grandchildren; brothers, Richard Woodrum, Dale Woodrum and Michael Woodrum; many nieces and nephews, as well as in-laws; and aunt, Mary Bowles of Beckley.

Service was March 29 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Margaret Kathryn Jones Midrowsky Wood

Margaret Kathryn Jones Midrowsky Wood, 83, of Oak Hill, died March 19, 2008 at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Nov. 29, 1924, at Calloway, Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Claudius Hart Jones Sr. and Eva Hoke Jones. Three brothers, Claudius H. Jones Jr., Lyle Jones and Charles Jones, also preceded her in death.

She was a retired nursing assistant for Plateau Medical Center.

Margaret was a member of the Mount Hope Christian Church.

Surviving: sons, Bobby Midrowsky and wife, Kathy of Tampa, Fla., Randy Midrowsky and wife, Linda, of Germany, David Jones of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Marshall Midrowsky and wife, Somkuan, of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers, Rodney Jones and wife, Vicky, of Oak Hill, Carlos Jones and wife, Ethel, of Oak Hill, and Bernard Jones and wife, Mary Ann, of Liberty, N.Y.; sisters, Joyce Robinson of Midwest City, Okla., and Kathy Medina of League City, Texas; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Graveside rites and committal service were March 22 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105 for the health of our children.
