Winifred Eileen Wallace Amick

Winifred Eileen Wallace Amick, 83, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Oak Hill, died April 15, 2008, at the Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa.

Born Dec. 8, 1924, at Huntington, she was the daughter of the late Ervie and Kathryn May Wallace. Her husband, Ray Samuel Amick, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Amick was a retired public school teacher.

She was a member of the Pythian Sisters when she lived in Oak Hill and the Red Mountain Community Church in Mesa.

Surviving: her loving children, Brenda Kay Piestewa of Tuba City, Ariz., Fay Samuel Amick II of Grand Junction, Colo., Martin Wallace Amick of Jackson, Tenn., Sherry Andre of Mesa, and Paul Tomlion Amick of Payson, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; three step-great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Anna Amick Barton.

Funeral service April 18 at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens Mortuary in Mesa. Burial followed at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Eugenia Darlenia Bailey

Eugenia “Lou” Darlenia Bailey, 40, of Daniels, died April 14, 2008, at home following a sudden illness.

Born May 25, 1967, in Oak Hill, Lou, as she was known to friends and family, was the daughter of Margie Hinkle of Glen Jean and the late Darrell Hinkle.

A veteran of United States Army and a member of Sun Missionary Church, Lou loved Jesus and children and was quick to help others, always putting her friends and family first.

Surviving, in addition to her mother: her loving husband, Marty, and their three children, Timothy and Rebecca Bailey and Joshua Ray Hinkle at home; brothers, Darrell Hinkle and wife, Tammy, of Charleston, Billy Hinkle and companion, Shannon, of Glen Jean, and Roger Hinkle and companion, Evie, of Kilsyth; and sisters, Elva Fox and husband, John, of Fayetteville and Cindy Hinkle of Glen Jean.

Funeral service was April 18 at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Joan Terry officiating. Burial followed in Pax Community Cemetery.

Algisa ‘Gese’ Bonifacio

Algisa “Gese” Bonifacio, 92, of Mount Hope, died April 13, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a short illness.

Born Aug. 9, 1915, at Glen Jean, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Maria Troiani Bonifacio. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Julius Bonifacio, Orval “Oggie” Bonifacio and Paul Bonifacio; and four sisters, Edith Bonifacio, Dorina Bonifacio, Rosina Gramacci and Lena Bergendahl.

She was a clerk for Bon Bon Confectionery and Hardware Store in Mount Hope, a business her family has owned since 1920. She was a member of the Catholic church.

Surviving: a brother, Floyd Bonifacio and his wife, Phyllis, of Mount Hope; a sister, Edith Davis of Dade City, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Leona Bonifacio of Mount Hope and Leila Bonifacio of Newport News, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service was April 20 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Jessie Parker and the Rev. Michael Kessinger officiating. Burial followed at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Clarence Bowen Jr.

Clarence Bowen Jr., 78, of Oak Hill, died April 10, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Oct. 10, 1929, at Longacre, he was the son of the late Clarence Bowen Sr. and Grace Tucker Bowen. He also was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lois Bowen, on March 7, 2006; a sister, Janet Bowen; a brother, Frank Bowen; and a son, Paul Bowen.

Clarence was a self-employed construction worker and a member of the Jones Avenue Church of God in Oak Hill, and attended the Carlisle Church of God.

Surviving: his son, Danny Bowen and wife, Vickie, of Fairfax, Va.; brothers, the Rev. Gene Bowen and wife, Marion, of Oak Hill, Allen Bowen of Charleston, James Bowen of Fredericksburg, Va., the Rev. John Bowen and wife, Jo, of Charleston, and the Rev. David Bowen of Malden; a sister, Jaunita See of Charlton Heights; granddaughters, Debbi Compton of Dumfries, Va., and Kim Bowen of Fayetteville; and great-grandchildren, Skyler and Kaitlyne Compton of Dumfries, Va.

Funeral service was April 16 at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill. Interment was in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Allen Chandler Jr.

Allen Chandler Jr., 79, of Mt. Hope, died April 11, 2008, in Columbus, Ohio.

Born July 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Allen and Vella (Lawson) Chandler. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, June (Lay) Chandler; sister, Betty Hoylman; and recently by his brother, Don J. Chandler.

Allen returned to Mt. Hope after working for 30 years at Libbey-Owens-Ford in Rossford, Ohio, retiring in 1984. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Masonic Paragon Lodge No. 788 AF & AM for over 50 years.

Surviving: his daughter, Karen Akers and husband, Richard, of Gaithersburg, Md.; son, Timothy Chandler of Newark, Ohio; granddaughter, Kelly Chandler, and great-granddaughter, Rayanne Lehman of Toledo, Ohio; his beloved little dog, Jenny; siblings, Susan Cromwell, Gladys Davis, Jean Polk, Fred Chandler, and Mary Lou Fowler; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Services were April 16 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Ronnie Stapleton officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Ruth E. Davis

Ruth E. Davis, 75, died April 16, 2008, at Montgomery General Hospital after a brief illness.

Born May 21, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Allie Pack Medley. She also was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy W. Davis; and siblings, Albert Medley, Robert Medley, and Carolyn Medley.

Ruth was a faithful member of the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and was an active member of the Willing Workers, Missionary Society, and choir. Ruth was a devoted wife, loving mother and supportive friend and family member. She will be missed by all!

Surviving: her eight children and devoted son-in-law, Ethan Davis (St. Louis, Mo.), Sharon Davis (Columbus, Ohio), Cassandra (Sand) Davis (Montgomery), Valerie Futrell (Columbus), Shirl and Joseph Burrow (Beards Fork), Roy W. Davis Jr. (Oak Hill), Glen Davis (Princeton) and Brad Davis (Charlotte, N.C.); siblings, Harold Medley (Columbus), Inez Sherrod (Annapolis, Md.), Marion Dillard (Beards Fork) and Edna Hopkins (Charleston); nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Service was April 19 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church at Beards Fork with Pastor Earl Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Meadow Haven Memorial Park at Ingram Branch.

Michael Keith Dodd

Michael Keith Dodd, 32, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Oak Hill, died April 14, 2008, in Fort Lauderdale as a result of complications from injuries sustained in a 1995 fall from the New River Gorge Bridge.

Born March 10, 1976, in Beckley, he was the son of Reginald “Reggie” and Terri Chambers Dodd of Oak Hill.

His paternal grandfather, Ralph Dodd, and maternal grandmother, Doris Chambers, preceded him in death.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill and attended a community church in Fort Lauderdale.

Mike attended Oak Hill High School and was a 1994 graduate of Fayetteville High School. While in high school he participated in the football, baseball and basketball programs.

He attended Concord College.

Surviving, in addition to his parents: a close friend, Erica Weber; a brother, Greg Dodd and his wife, Jackie, of Oak Hill; paternal grandmother, Ida Dodd; maternal grandfather, Tom Chambers; aunts, Gloria Wallace of California, Sue Corder and husband, Meade, of Oak Hill, Polly Reynolds and husband, Louie, of Fayetteville, and Tammi Chambers of Oak Hill; and several cousins.

Service, with cremation following, was April 19 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Father Paul Yuenger officiating.

James Roy Gill

James Roy Gill, 69, of Victor, died April 15, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born April 11, 1939, in Victor, he was the son of the late Eldridge and Ollie Ellison Gill. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Marie Gill, on March 10, 2000; a sister, Martha Skaggs; and brothers, Eli Gill and Vonie “Joe” Gill.

James was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, and a timberman and barber by trade.

Surviving: a daughter, Teresa and her husband, Kenny Summers, of Victor; sons, Jeffrey Gill and his wife, Kimberly, of Victor, and Daniel Gill of Beckley; sisters, Janie Young and Mary Skinner, both of Union, and Marie Neubert of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Kara and Emma Gill; and a close friend, Bobby Jean Fair of Victor.

Funeral service was April 18 at Hopewell Baptist Church, Victor, with Pastor Mason Wilson and the Rev. Michael Anderson officiating. Burial followed in McKinney Memorial Cemetery, Victor.

Eleanor E. Walker Hardman

Eleanor E. Walker Hardman, 85, of Atlantic Beach, N.C., formerly of Oak Hill, died April 16, 2008, at Harborview Healthcare Center in Morehead City, N.C.

Born July 11, 1922, at Danese, she was the daughter of the late Emory Walker and Elsie Martin Hodges. Her husband, George Hardman, also preceded her in death in 1982.

She was a retired clerk/typist and bookkeeper for the West Virginia Library Commission.

Eleanor was a member of Parkview Baptist Church in Morehead City.

Surviving: several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. David Sneed conducted graveside rites and committal service April 20 at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with burial following.

Clarise Ramey Jordan

Clarise Ramey Jordan, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, 76, of Hilltop, formerly of Mt. Hope, died April 18, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Aug. 27, 1931, at Mt. Hope, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Clara C. Rice Ramey. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. Jordan; a granddaughter, Kami Ann Logan; and a sister, Vella Merrix.

Clarise was a former employee of the City of Mount Hope and retired from the Bank of Raleigh with over 20 years of service. Mrs. Jordan was a graduate of Mount Hope High School and attended the Mount Hope Christian Church.

Clarise will always be remembered for the goodness in her heart, for both people and furry friends alike. Her laughter was contagious. During her life, she enjoyed flower arranging, Bingo and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends, leaving them with precious memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Beve G. Justice

Beve G. Justice, 94, of Hilltop, died April 18, 2008, at Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital.

Born March 22, 1914, at Woodsville, he was the son of the late William and Cynthia Yates Justice. He also was preceded in death by brothers, Jack, Tom, Nile, Ed, Joe, Charlie, Harry and Arthur Justice; and sisters, Mima Dolen, Edith Collins and Ethel Snodgrass.

Mr. Justice was a retired carpenter, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1207 of Charleston.

Surviving: a sister-in-law, Colleen Justice; 37 nieces and nephews, including Clara Warner of Oak Hill, who was his caretaker.

Services were April 23 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Burial followed at Grandview Memorial Park in Dunbar with military rites by American Legion #61 of Clendenin.

Rev. Alene Ella Minnich

Rev. Alene Ella Minnich, 80, of Vinton, Va., formerly of Oak Hill, died April 18, 2008, at the Springtree Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center, in Roanoke, Va., following complications from a stroke.

Born May 6, 1927, in Sprague, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Linnie Dean of Oak Hill. She also was preceded in death by her younger sister, Loraine Dean, who passed at 18 months of age; her husband, Ray Minnich; and stillborn sons, Samuel and David.

She was a 1946 graduate of Ronceverte High School and was ordained by the Wesleyan Church in West Virginia in 1965, where she held the pastorate of churches across West Virginia and Kentucky. She loved people, but had a special heart for children.

She was a member for many years of the Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle on Oyler Avenue.

At the age of 52, she returned to school and graduated top of her class in nursing and was pinned an LPN. She retired from nursing in 1989 and worked private duty for many years thereafter.

Surviving: a daughter, Martha Ann Mason and husband, Mitchell, and their son, Mitchell III “Sammy,” of Vinton, Va., with whom she resided; sisters-in-law, Lucille Smith of Oak Hill, Faye Piotrowski of Lochgelly, Dorothy Flinner of Longview, Texas, and Loretta Tennant and husband, Sonny, of Oak Hill; several nieces and nephews; and a multitude of very dear friends across the country.

Service was April 22 at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, with interment at High Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Ben Peyton, the Rev. David Gallimore and the Rev. Darrell Prater officiated.

James Edward Perkins

James Edward Perkins, 89, of Fayetteville, died April 14, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following an extended illness.

Born July 6, 1918, at South Caperton, he was the son of the late Edward and Anna M. Stotts Perkins.

Mr. Perkins, another member of the greatest generation, has passed on. He was a member of the First Church of God in Fayetteville. Mr. Perkins was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with General Patton, and he received two Purple Hearts while serving his country. He was a retired newspaper pressman in Sacramento, Calif.

Surviving: his wife, Edith Perkins of Fayetteville; five sons; four daughters; 45 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were April 16 at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Bob Coulter and Pastor Justin Seay officiating. Burial followed in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Thomas Anthony ‘Tom’ Perkins

Thomas Anthony “Tom” Perkins, 86, of Oak Hill, died April 13, 2008, at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill.

Born Dec. 26, 1921, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late John A. and Henrietta Barrett Perkins. Tom was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Perkins, Merrion Perkins and George Perkins; and three sisters, Ruth Halstead, Opal Short and Doris Goff.

Mr. Perkins was a retired sales clerk for Noye’s Mens and Boys Store with over 40 years of service.

He was a member of the First Brethren Church in Oak Hill where he served as a layman, a member of the American Legion and a former member of the Oak Hill Lions Club.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving: his wife, Dorothy Armstrong Perkins; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were April 16 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. William Skeldon officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Eva Dempsey Reynolds

Eva Dempsey Reynolds, 87, of Fayetteville, died April 18, 2008, at Fayette Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Fayetteville, following an extended illness.

Born Oct. 21, 1920, at Winona, she was the daughter of the late Ira Hoten Dempsey and Rosa Davis Dempsey. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Harvey “Muss” Reynolds; brothers, Boston Dempsey, Dennis Dempsey, Ivan Dempsey and Donnelly Dempsey; an infant sister; nephews, Jimbo and Lee Dempsey; and a niece, Beverly.

Mrs. Reynolds was a member of Fayetteville United Methodist Church and a member of Winola Chapter No. 59, Order of Eastern Star.

She had worked at the Fayette County Vital Statistic Register Office and the Circuit Clerk’s Office and retired after 31 years of service.

Surviving: her niece, Anna “Dottie” Griswald of Jackson, Mich.; nephew, Billy Dempsey of Jackson; sister-in-law, Esta Reynolds of Fayetteville; niece and caregiver, Kathy Buckland of Fayetteville; nephews, Bob Reynolds, Bill Reynolds and Lewis Reynolds; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Bessie Lee Honaker Stewart

Bessie Lee Honaker Stewart, 95, of Scarbro, died April 16, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Feb. 2, 1913, at Arnett, she was the daughter of the late John Ashby and Ina Honaker. Bessie was the last surviving member of the immediate family. Her husband, Ralph H. Stewart; son, Richard Robert Stewart; brother, Delmer Honaker; grandson, Norman J. Stewart; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Annette Payne, also preceded her in death.

She was a member of Full Gospel Church of Scarbro for 32 years and was considered the church mother. She was a homemaker.

Surviving: daughters, Carolyn Lee Hagerman and husband, William, of Scarbro, with whom Bessie had made her home since 2002, and Virginia Annette Lilly and husband, Jerrell, of Newton, N.C.; grandchildren, Miranda Hose and husband, Mark, Regina Johnson and husband, Jonathan, Richard Stewart Jr. and wife, Lisa, Karen Payne, Meagan Bailey and husband, Marshall, and Debbie Stewart; granddaughter-in-law, Rita Stewart; 13 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Beverly Jean Raines Sutphin

Beverly Jean Raines Sutphin, 71, of Hilltop, died April 14, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born July 1, 1936, at Oswald, she was the daughter of the late Herbert A. and Alice Virginia Morgan Raines. Her son, Roger Dale Sutphin, and sisters, Dorothy Amick and Donna Cody, also preceded her in death.

Beverly attended the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She was a homemaker who so loved spending time with her family and friends. A woman of many talents, she enjoyed her hobbies which included sewing, making and collecting dolls and teddy bears, crafts, painting, feeding and watching the birds and flower gardening.

Surviving: her husband of 53 years, Billy F. Sutphin; daughters, Debra Jean Barker and husband, Larry Wayne, of Lochgelly, Laurie Ann Fuller and husband, Rev. Darrell Wayne, of Hilltop, and Traci Lynn Sutphin of Hilltop; brother, Charles “Jimmy” Raines of Oak Hill; sisters-in-law, Bessie Sutphin of Oak Hill and Janet Sutphin of Scarbro; grandchildren, Jeremy Michael Barker and Sarah Mae Barker, both of Lochgelly; and by several nieces and nephews.

Service was April 18 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Darrell Fuller and the Rev. Robert Pauley officiating. Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Doris Lee Treadway

Doris Lee Treadway, 77, of Oak Hill, formerly of Fayetteville, died April 12, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Aug. 28, 1930, at Cunard, she was the daughter of the late Roy H. Sexton and Modena Carte Sexton. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Treadway; her son, Roger L. Treadway, who was a Fayette County deputy killed in the line of duty in 1975; a daughter, Connie Harrah, in 1980; and a brother, Roy H. Sexton Jr.

Doris was retired from the Fayette County Board of Education and was a member of the First Church of God of Fayetteville.

Surviving: her daughter, Caren Hunt and husband, Robert, of Glen Jean; a brother, Harrison Dale Sexton of Oak Hill; a sister, Dorothy Stoner of Morganton, N.C.; grandchildren, Catrina Neal McClung, Melissa Campbell, Felicia Broach, Larry Harrah II, Nicolas Hunt and Adam Hunt; and seven great-grandchildren.

Carmen Leigh Gay Walton

Carmen Leigh Gay Walton, 49, of Lochgelly, died April 15, 2008, at St. Mary's Medical center in Huntington.

Born Dec. 22, 1958, at Decota, she was the daughter of the late John Floyd and Earnestine Burgess Gay. A brother, James E. Gay, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Walton was a member of the Baptist faith and attended a Pentecostal church and was a homemaker.

Surviving: husband, Ellis “Doc” Walton; son, Samuel Adam Walton Sr. and wife, Tiffany, of Oak Hill; brother, John Gay of Oak Hill; sisters, Shirley G. Evans of St. Albans, Mary Frances Hostetter of Oak Hill, Anna McCormick of Hurricane and Sandra Hodge of Arkansas; and grandchildren, Sulyna Goodson, Lilly Walton and Samuel Adam Walton Jr., all of Lochgelly.

Services were April 19 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.
