Clifford William ‘Bunk’ Carr
Clifford William “Bunk” Carr, 86, of Lilly Park, Rainelle, died May 1, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, following a long illness.
Born April 8, 1922, at Landisburg, he was the son of the late Alpheus C. and Virgie M. Lewis Carr. He also was preceded in death by brothers, Cecil, Grady and Carol “Boodle” Carr; half-brothers, Den, Vess and Carrie Carr; and a sister, Shirley White.
Bunk was a retired coal miner and carpenter.
Bunk was a Jehovah’s Witness and witnessed to everyone he saw. He loved hunting, fishing and carpentry, but most of all, he loved music, and was a talented musician who could play any musical instrument by ear. He enjoyed singing and playing his accordion, piano and keyboard. Bunk was especially proud of his grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart.
Surviving: his wife of 53 years, Betty June Nutter Carr; children, Belinda J. Hylton and husband, Howard, of Mount Lookout, Greg C. Carr and wife, Joyce, of Mount Lookout, Zackary D. Robinson and husband, William, of Rainelle, and Tangela L. Arnett and husband, Danny, of Rainelle; 1grandchildren, Clifford Hylton, Shane and wife, Janette Hylton, and Callie Hylton of Mount Lookout, Greg Carr and wife, Amanda, Melanie Perdue and husband, Adam, of Mount Lookout, Brielle and Abbaney Carr of Rainelle, Charles, Seth and Aaron Rudd of Freeport, Texas, Cara E. Carr, Levi and Sydney Robinson, and Julian and Caitlyn Arnett, all of Rainelle; great-grandchildren, Makayla Isabella Carr and Brandon Scott Perdue, both of Mount Lookout; sisters, Chilla V. Carr of Lilly Park, Rainelle, and Isabelle Bass of Melbourne, Fla.; and special nephews and niece, Curtis Cutlip, Michael Carr and Kristy Walker.
Service was May 6 at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with William Robinson officiating. Burial followed at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Garnet Jarrell Fedukovich
Garnet Jarrell Fedukovich, 79, of Rt. 1 Fayetteville, died May 5, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.
Born May 16, 1928, at Chattaroy, she was the daughter of the late Luther Jarrell Sr. and Hattie Fitch Jarrell.
Mrs. Fedukovich was a member of the Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle and a homemaker.
Surviving: husband, John W. Fedukovich; daughter, Vicky Fedukovich of Rt. 1, Fayetteville; a favorite niece who was raised by Garnet and John, Connie McGuire of Fayetteville; brothers, Luther Jarrell Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., James Jarrell of College Park, Md., Arthur “Pinky” Jarrell of College Park, Md.; sisters, Louise Mullens of College Park, Md., and Virginia Hollins of Daniels; and several nieces and nephews, and her loving dog, Muffin.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 9 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Allen Gallimore officiating. Burial will be at Bibb Cemetery at Gatewood.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

William Lacy ‘Bill’ Garten
William Lacy “Bill” Garten, 79, of Hinton, died May 2, 2008, at Summers County-ARH in Hinton following a lengthy illness.
Born June 9, 1928, at Garten, he was the son of the late Lacy A. and Randolph Myers Garten.
Mr. Garten was a 1945 graduate of Fayetteville High School, lettering in football, basketball, and track. He participated in the 1945 North-South football game. He was awarded a basketball scholarship by West Virginia University and attended the school until transferring to Concord College in 1946. He lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Concord and was selected All-Conference in football in 1949.
In 1950, Bill signed a baseball contract with the Chicago Cubs and played in the Appalachian and Western Carolina leagues. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and served his country in the Korean Conflict. Upon his release in 1954, he started his teaching career at Hinton High School and was assistant football coach and head basketball and baseball coach at Hinton from 1955-1956. In 1957 he was named head football, basketball and baseball coach. He also served as track coach for two years. His accomplishments as football coach consisted of leading the Bobcats to the state finals in 1963, losing to Ceredo-Kenova, winning the state class AA football championship in 1968 and defeating Oceana 9-0. He retired as football coach after the 1978 season. He taught social studies and physical education for 30 years at Hinton High, retiring in 1985. His impact and guidance on young student athletes was immeasurable. In 2002, Summers County High School, which succeeded Hinton High School, renamed their football stadium Garten Stadium in honor of Coach Garten.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting grouse, turkey and deer. He also enjoyed fishing for trout, bass and channel cats.
He was a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, being past exalted ruler, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Willow Wood Country Club and the Retired Teachers Association. Bill was also a member of Hinton First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving: his wife of 58 years, Elaine Bradley Garten; a son, Bill and wife, Luci Garten, of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Sally Garten of Barger Springs; and a granddaughter, Lacy Garten.
Memorial service was May 7 at First Presbyterian Church, Hinton, with the Rev. Dr. Barbara Romfo officiating. Private interment was in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

Roland Nelson Massey Sr.
Roland Nelson Massey Sr., 74, of Oak Hill, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at his residence following an apparent heart attack.
Born May 27, 1933, at Burnwell, he was the son of the late John Earley and Clara Ellen Scarbro Massey. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Wandra Lou Jenkins.
Mr. Massey formerly worked for Republic Steel in Ohio, and later at Long-Airdox in Oak Hill. He was of the Protestant faith.
Surviving: his wife, Wanda May Roberts Massey; a son, Roland Nelson Massey Jr. of Oak Hill; his daughters, Rebecca May Toombs of Oak Hill, Deborah Lynn Massey of Fayetteville, and Sharon Kay Massey and Rita Ann Massey, both of Oak Hill; his brother, Jerry John Massey of Scarbro; his sisters, Annie Belma Sumpter of Scarbro, Mae Eloise Stone of Mount Hope, and Ina Pearl Mannings of Scarbro; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-grandchild yet to be born.
Service was May 4 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Ralph Candler officiating.

Kellis Wilson Miller
Kellis Wilson Miller, 79, of Grandview, Mo., formerly of Oak Hill, died April 25, 2008, at Research Medical Center.
Born July 3, 1928, in Minden, he was the son of the late Newton Calvin and Roxie Ettie Miller.
He grew up in Oak Hill, where he was a 1946 graduate of Oak Hill High School. He was an enthusiastic member of the OHHS/CHS Alumni Association.
Kellis attended Cincinnati College of Music, followed by military service in the Korean War with the United States Air Force. He sang with the New York City Opera Company for over 10 years and also enjoyed performing professionally in musical comedy and various concerts.
In 1957, he wed Ruth Seek, and in 1971, the young family moved to Grandview. Kellis worked at Jenkins and Wurlitzer Music Companies and at Truman Medical Center for a number of years, from which he retired in 1994. Kellis shared his passion for faith and music while singing with the choir of the First Baptist Church of Grandview for many years.
Surviving: his wife, Ruth Seek Miller; a daughter, Paris Smith of Bevier, Mo.; sons, Stephen Miller of Raymore, Mo., and Kellis Miller of Blue Springs, Mo.; sisters, Betty Kennedy and Iona Cummings, both of Oak Hill; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral service was April 28 at First Baptist Church of Grandview. Burial followed at Green Lawn Cemetery, Kansas City, Mo.

George Kermit Mullins
George Kermit Mullins, 86, of Turkey Creek in Ansted, died April 29, 2008, at Summersville Memorial Hospital Extended Care.
Born April 8, 1922, in Lookout (Pike County), Ky., he was a son of the late Sterling and Stella Mae Smith Mullins. He also was preceded in death by a grandson, Caleb Nathanael Mullins of Layland; a sister, Ethel Potter; and a brother, Sterling Mullins Jr.
Mr. Mullins was a retired coal miner from Cannelton Industries, a member of UMWA and a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving: his wife, Eileen Mullins; daughters, Suesann Baharloo of Beaver and Rebecca L. Walkup of Ansted; sons, Curtis Mullins of Bickmore, Marvin Mullins of Layland and Charles Mullins of Lookout; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service, with burial following, was May 2 at Montgomery Memorial Park Mausoleum, London, with the Rev. Junior Plumley officiating.

Jimmie Ray Smith
Jimmie Ray Smith, 56, of Lookout, died May 1, 2008, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born May 30, 1951, he was the son of the late James Floyd and Mamie Ritter Smith. He also was preceded in death by brothers, Pete Smith and Mickey Smith; and a sister, Mary Smith.
Jimmie was an avid reader and enjoyed pitching horseshoes. He attended the Church of God Prophecy. He was a truck driver for Beckley Garbage Disposal Inc. for 20 years.
Surviving: his wife, Donna Jean Ritter Smith; sons, Little Jimmie Smith of California, Michael Ritter of Lookout, Farmer Ritter of Beckley, and Steven Smith of Beckley; a daughter, Desiree Smith of Georgia; four grandchildren; a brother, John William Smith of Chicago, Ill.; and sisters, Della Burrows of Montana and Peggy Wooten of North Carolina.
Service was May 4 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Forest Gray officiating. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Ray Charles Stewart
Ray Charles Stewart, 62, of Piney View, died May 2, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, after a courageous battle with lung disease.
Born Feb. 14, 1946, at Gatewood, he was the son of the late James Henry and Lucy Mayes Stewart. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Green.
Before Ray fell ill, he greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and many friends. He especially cherished his time with his two dear grandchildren. He was of the Christian faith. This year on March 10, Ray and his wife were married 42 years.
Surviving: his wife, Priscilla Stewart of Piney View; his son, James Stewart and wife, Lola, of Crab Orchard; his daughter, Michelle Fry and husband, Dwayne; their two children, Jessica Dawn and Charles Tyler, his two grandchildren, all of Piney View; sisters, Kathleen Aliff and husband, Mark, of Mossy, and Dolly Simpson and husband, Robert, of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Lee Allen Stewart of Oak Hill; a very special friend, Danny Hill of Piney View; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services were May 5 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Cecil Smith officiating. There was no graveside service.

Margie Zenith Lafferty Tyree
Margie Zenith Lafferty Tyree, 96, of Beckley, died April 28, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Born July 27, 1911, at Willis Branch, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rosa M. Williams Lafferty. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Tennis A. Tyree; a son, Jack Tyree; and two infant children. Margie was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by seven brothers, Everett, Dillian, Troy, Winton, James, Denny and Eugene Lafferty, and three sisters, Mabel Feazelle, Lillian Woolwine and Dixie Pennington.
Mrs. Tyree was a member of Mabscott Christian Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Surviving: a son, William “Bill” Tyree and wife, Ellen, of Rockville, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Tyree of Mount Holly, N.C.; grandchildren, Timothy Tyree and wife, Connie, of Beckley, Scott Tyree and wife, Evonka, of Mount Holly, Kelli Tilston and husband, Mike, of Katy, Texas, Chris Tyree and wife, Julia, of Clute, Texas, Michael Tyree of Rockville and Kylen Johnson of Clarksburg, Md.; and 14 great-grandchildren.

June Marie Whitlow, 76, of Ghent, died May 2, 2008, at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington following a long illness.
Born April 21, 1932, at Eskdale, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Bowyer and Dixie Moore Bowyer. She also was preceded in death by a brother, James Lewis Bowyer.
Mrs. Whitlow was a retired beautician and was a member of the Westview Missionary Baptist Church at Odd.
Surviving: her husband, Clarence Glen Whitlow; sons, Clarence Glen Whitlow Jr. of Ghent, Thomas Lee Whitlow and wife Margaret of Ghent, John Albert Whitlow of Sharon, and Thomas Jeffrey Whitlow of Ghent; a daughter, Debra Blackwell and husband, Rodney, of Monticello, Miss.; brothers, Bill Bowyer of Sharon, and Jack Bowyer of Madison; grandchildren, Amy, Jason, Charlie, Steven, Ashley, and Jimmy; great-grandchildren, Veronica, Vanessa, and Braxton; and special niece and caregiver, Linda Pauley.
